i sometimes would like to share a particular movie to a friend by just sending him a quick link so that he lands on a page where he can just play back that one single movie
(without going through the myplex registration process and/or getting access to the rest of my server)
the subsonic music server is a good example for that kind of "share link" functionality
One thing I've personally set up is a "Featured Movie" section: this can be shared with anyone with a myplex account (it is free, after all), and it works as follows:
Featured movie section has only one scanned folder: this is the folder of the movie we're sharing that week.
When a new movie goes up to be shared, simply remove the old folder, add a new one :)
I think that this would be a great feature, I would call it a permalink, a link that would always take a person directly to the content. I know that I've had a couple of instances where this would have been handy. One time I was talking to a friend about a special that I recently watched, and I tried to send them a link to my plex/web, which didn't work. The other time would be sometimes when I am listing to my music and a song comes on that reminds me of my wife I would like to be able to send her a link that she can just click on and would start playing the music.
It’s unfortunate that this topic hasn’t been visited for over four years.
Creating a single serve / disposable link to share a piece of media with a person without forcing them to make an account and jump through extra hoops is a very desirable feature.
Discord’s “instant invite” system is a near perfect implementation of this system.
Maybe not a permalink though, but a random link that could be refreshed or regenerated to kill any previous access. Also a page in settings to see when these single serve links were last accessed.
I think this would be a very welcome addition, lowering the entry barrier for new plex users (they can try first and then create an account if they liked it) and also serve as an easy way for Plex to get known.
Would be great for future releases to allow invite links to be generated for sharing content with others. Discord is a great example of what I’m describing here. This way, you can set expirations to invite links or delete and generate new ones.
Issue: If I sent an invite to someone with a pre-existing Plex account registered with a different email address, the invite has to be re-sent in order to login without creating a duplicate user account.
+1 Would love the ability to send link for single media item, playlist, collection, etc! It’d be super useful even if only for my shared users (that are already registered with my server and have paid money for unlocked client streaming) but agree with other folks in that it’d be an excellent way to provide soft intro/demo for new/free users. Can’t believe this thread has so little attention. Plex team, what would it take? Willing to donate more to the cause if it helps make this feature request a reality!
I have plenty of audiobooks in my plex library. When listening in plex iOS app I want to save link in task manager at that time stamp with track details to come back to or to reference later! Now have to pause and type it all out and find manually, should just click link and open at that point on whichever device I’m using!
Then would be to share with select friends who have access to my library.
Another scenario would be sharing a photo or set of photos. It would be awesome to send a link that would load all the photos in a specific folder on my plex server.
definitely wish this feature was implemented. would help immensely with making media recommendations to friends (and encourage them to use plex more and subscription services less)
