Intel NUC/system feedback

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#: 4.12.2 (I think?)

I’m just looking for some overall feedback on my current setup, what I should be expecting and if I have a problem or not.

  • Intel NUC7i5BNK * 7th Gen i5-7260U, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640
  • Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2400 MT/S (PC4-19200) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory (CT2K8G4SFS824A)
  • Samsung 960 EVO Series - 250GB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD
  • For storage, I connect to a NAS
  • Windows 10 Pro v 1903

I’ve been seeing system shutdowns and I believe it’s thermal related. I recently had to re-setup my synced media and this caused the system to convert all the files again. Normally this has been fine but once I started seeing these system shutdowns, I poked around at the thermals of the PC and as soon as Plex starts converting any media, it spikes to 99-102* C nearly instantly (average running temp is maybe 60*C).

This got me researching whether or not I want to upgrade to a new server (which is another topic). Before I plunge money in to that though, does this sound normal/expected?

I am also generally a bit disappointed with this NUC, the 4k video output is lacking (is that expected as well? I recall when I built this, June 2017, the remarks were that 4k worked, but I haven’t found it to be reliable during video playback).

Any and all general feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Waiting on Ice Lake?

Were you trying to use it hooked to a display? Sounds like you need to redo the heat sink. As a server it should have handled 4K with the HW transcoder turned on.

I’m guessing Ice Lake is the next latest and greatest? I’m not necessarily waiting for anything, I just noticed this PC not performing as well as it used to (especially lately where it’s shutting down randomly, which again, I think is related to those insane temps of the CPU).

This is our HTPC so it is connected via HDMI to our media display/monitor and for the most part, works great. If we try to stream things like Youtube 4k, the video can be choppy (and we have gigabit internet as well as gagabit intranet using ubiquiti gear, I don’t believe it’s a networking issue for throughput).
