I have noticed that most of the Apple and Disney Plus Dolby Vision content is MP4. Its very difficult to find it in MKV. When I play back those DV MP4 files though, i quickly have it crash, which appears like its buffering. Its not actually a buffering problem because I can playback high bitrate DV 4K remux in other formats easily.
I know this isn’t a limitation of the Shield as if i spin up Emby, it will playback fine on my shield.
Has this always happened, or has this started happening with the 8.23 beta?
Ive had the issue for many months. I just thought it was an incompatibility until i messed with emby today. I am not sure it ever worked. MKV and .TS work fine with Dolby Vision though. Streaming, FEL and MEL content all work in MKV and .TS.
Do you have a sample file you could share, please?
I dont have a sample, i have a whole file I could share(6-8gb) lol I first noticed it with WandaVision when it first came out, but its any episode of see, mythic quest, loki, monsters at work, ted lasso, any apple or Disney plus original does it that is in mp4 and Dolby Vision. Which are most release.
To be specific this is an issue with the Chromecast with google tv, firestick and shields and specifically with DV. Also, they will often play perfectly for a few minutes but after some time it dies. Like Loki episode 4 starts about a minute after the intro so like 2:30 in.
A file of that size is fine, if you’re happy to upload it somewhere to share, or you can create a smaller sample.

I don’t have any additional updates at this time, though I have been able to reproduce the issue with the sample you provided.

Weekly inquire. Any updates? Maybe a fix to be implemented at some point in the future?
There will hopefully be a fix in future, but I don’t have anything further to share at the moment
Have you tried remuxing the MP4 into MKV? I had the same problem and a simple remux fixed the issue.
MKV works fine, but its a huge hassle to do that for every episode, every week, across like 10 shows at a time. Content is not usually labeled what it is so its a gamble whether you get mp4 or mkv. Which means you need to constantly be monitoring it. So while your suggestion works, its a bandaid.
The real solution is to have mp4 work.

@DaveBinM Hi @Sittingmongoose asked me to play a specific episode in mp4/m4v container all the way through in Dolby Vision mode and submit logs hoping it might help with his problem
