I hope someone can help me out i have a 1gbit up and download connection and i wanted to give plex a try again. Everything went smooth and seems to work fine . But when i add a library and i activate the scan. within 5 minutes my whole network is slow and latency to everything is like 1000ms + . i checked the bandwidth and there is almost no activity on my connection but i cant even get 5mbit on speedtest. . It is even so that when i scan my library i can almost not get on the internet or do anything else with my connection . It just slips up . And again its not using bandwidth its just slipping up and i dont know where it comes from. If i do a scan with other media servers there is no problem and i still have my 1 gbit connection.
It’s probably because if you’re doing a fresh scan and are adding a lot of content at once, Plex obviously has to use the internet to pull meta data for the all of the content (all the info and stuff for each item etc)
yeah i know but shouldnt it be bandwidth related ? I monitored it with nethogs and the plex processes are not even using 200mbit i have 600mbit free easily but within 5 minutes everything slips up and nothing is getting over 5 mbit.
and its a seperate server not on my main system all my devices have almost no internet anymore.
I mean it definitely would be bandwidth related. Think of all the content on Plex at once trying to make connections to the internet at once to download the metadata (couple 100 to 1000 items, thats a lot of download connections). It’s not like its only doing one item at a time, its many at a time so that would strain bandwidth. And you said its not the main system, but everything goes in and out of the same ISP modem, unless you somehow have more than one modem.
I would only be concerned if it didn’t go back up afterwards.
Well i also have streams running and they completely go dead . So is it the number of connections then because its not even using 200mbit of the 1000 i have .
Logs please?
i will try again when no people using my server later tonight and i will make a log from it .
This is strange.
It behaves normally most of the time?
Its only when i add a new library and start scanning it my whole network goes boom and slips up while there is almost no bandwidth being used . It seems that plex just fills up the router/modem with connections.
Routers don’t work that way but hosts do.
Routers pass the packets. A connection consists of the 4 basic parameters: IP/port pair of the source and IP/port pair of the host plus a “current state” flag
If anything, the host is jamming up because it’s not letting go -OR- the ISP is throttling outbound connection requests (thinking they are torrents)
Well that still a little weird why my whole network collapses and i have 0 speed and latency goes thru the roof. I can download torrents with no limitations and they are not traffic shaped and its only with plex library full scan . When i use a different media server no issues at all with full library scans etc.
But i want to use plex so i have to find a way or someone needs to know whats wrong and give me a solution.
That indeed makes it weird. When you have time:
- Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced - DEBUG on - VERBOSE off - save
- Restart PMS
- Recreate its failure
- After letting it sit in this failed state a minute or two
- Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
- Attach that ZIP file here and I will look
So here is the log the scan is from around 02:20 a 02:25 ish and i included a screenshot what happens with watching a live stream on another system.Plex Media Server Logs_2019-06-10_02-34-43.zip (1.8 MB)
Seems like i found the problem . As soon as im over 1600 open connections my internet router/modem slips up .
Here is a screenshot of open connections due to the library scan and the problems begin.
So i dont know how i can throttle of limit the open connections that would solve the problem. Plex just keeps opening new connections and closed them a lot later so it just keeps ramping up.
As soon as i stop the pms server the connections will close and within 2 minutes im at 500 connections only and my internet behaves normal again.
Just wanted to let you know that i solved it to set max open connections per ip in my modem/router to 1000 . Scanning is a little slower but internet stays superfast and stable and does not slip up. It’s a workaround for the insane amount connections made by plex library scan so i hope there will be a setting in the future to manage/throttle that.
