Internet over WLAN, Plex over LAN?

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252

Hi Plex community,

My question might be a more general networking question, but since I’m messing around with my local network to get Plex working I figured I might as well ask it here

I’ve recently upgraded my connection from DSL to cable and I used to have my media server machine (which I also use as my main rig) plugged into a powerline adapter with an ethernet port. In my new situation using the adapter absolutely destroys the speed: down to 50 mbps from 250. So I’m currently connected using a WiFi antenna to keep that 250. I’ve read somewhere that is it generally a bad idea to run the/any server over WiFi, which brings me to my question:

Is it possible to create a networking setup on my Windows 10 (server) machine in which I get my internet connection over WiFi, while my LG TV can get access to the server over ethernet. The TV is connected to the modem with an ethernet cable without powerline adapter, using in-wall cabling. Currently, if I plug in an ethernet cable into my machine internet is served over that connection with said horrid speed. As if Windows gives ethernet precedence over WiFi. Perhaps a way to disable internet access in the Windows ethernet adapter settings while still being discoverable over ethernet?

I hope what I’m asking makes sense and that perhaps someone knows how to do this

Thanks!

I have run across this before. You may be able to set up your Windows machine as an internet gateway to get around this. In theory, only the internet feed would go via wireless and the Ethernet connection would be used for the internal network. I would hope that with that setup Windows would make more intelligent choices. But, I’ve never tried it that way. It may still choose the wrong thing as the internet connection. There may also be something of use here:

Presumably, you were using powerline because running an Ethernet cable is impractical. One option you might try, is one of the many mesh wireless network solutions available. Still wireless but unless you are streaming in 4K, you may get the extra bandwidth you need (no buffering while streaming). It depends where the mesh units are placed.

A cheap fix (for now), night be to limit the resolution on playback to 720 to make use of the wireless you have currently. I have a 65" screen and native 720 res videos appear sharp enough on a 65" screen.

Is the Plex server near the TV that has wired ethernet? If so, acquire a cheap 4-port ethernet network switch and plug both devices into the switch and then the switch into the jack going to the modem. This way the Plex server and TV will have fast, reliable wired access to the modem.

There is nothing special you need to do.
Your server is connected to the router per WiFi.
Your TV is connected to the router per wire.
Unless you have activated some kind of “isolation” setting, this is all that’s needed.
The router will forward the packets from your server to the TV and vice versa.
