Internet Required to view a local server

Is it required to let plex talk to:

resources-dcdn.plexapp.com or plex.tv or pubsub.plex.tv or v4.plex.tv in order to view local libraries?

I find that when I block the plex server from talking to these addresses, eventually I see that my library disappears in several days. Only when I allow these connections temporarily am I able to see my libraries locally.

once i see them I immediately block plex servers again, just for this to happen several days later.

Yes,

The server and local apps must authenticate against Plex.tv

After authentication, you can configure certain players (along with the server) to allow LAN devices (by IP, not FQDN) to run without auth.

You will still need to allow access to plex.tv for:

  1. Server certificate update
  2. Codecs for the transcoder

Deal breaker for a lifetime subscriber. i see that yall are now monetizing off of peoples meta data on the servers. Pretty disgusting.

not the same plex i signed up for years ago.

“One of the things we’ve already started to prove in 2023 is that we can absolutely monetize some of that data…in a very privacy-friendly way. There’s no personally identifiable information being used,” Valory said. “We already proved we could make money on that this year, so, in 2024, we’re putting more wood behind that arrow. And arguably, even though our current business is already growing 30%-40% per year, that could dwarf it in two to three years. That is a really big market opportunity,” he added.

It’s always required internet access to authenticate – at least since I started in 2013

Autheticate what? I’ve been a lifetime member since 2013.
