Invalid encoder type 'ass' when playing from Shield TV

I’m on a Shield 2015 that I haven’t used in about a year. (moved, etc.) All media I have plays fine from Plex Web and Samsung TV, but when playing it from the Shield, playback fails with the generic error (“An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”)

The server emits a single log line when starting playback from this device:

Mar 14, 2023 10:21:12.981 [0x7f1a5dcf9b38] ERROR - [Req#707/Transcode/3c72488b87a0aefa-com-plexapp-android
/40f89b09-3947-431a-bf8a-41d5e5df0d8b] Invalid encoder type ‘ass’

This happens for both H264 and HEVC 150 files, even when I start playback without subs. None of these files have ASS subs either, so I don’t understand why this would happen.

Server Version#: 1.31.2.6783
Player Version#: 8.29.1.30697

Has anyone else run into this? Google turns up nothing.

Thank you.

Update the Plex app. Current version is 9.17.

Thank you! That was an easy fix. Did multiple Android updates when I booted it up today, but didn’t think about the apps themselves.

This can be closed, thanks again for the fast response.
