What I am trying to do
Watch a 2mbps 1080p anime with subtitles, burn subtitles always

Expected behavior
Video to start playing

Actual behavior
logs state my tv (vizio) not shield. Plex player is running on a shield, not the tv’s apps platform for sure. Plex server is external location running in docker container

What works
browser, roku, any non-shield device, forcing shield to transcode to 480p

What I think is happening
[Req#11d59] Unable to find client profile for device; platform=Vizio SmartCast, platformVersion=2.6.0-2219.0021, device=Vizio SmartCast 2.6.0-2219.0021, model=V505-J09
shows when I try to transcode. This fails and it never stops playing.
I think the server is not attempting to send a working transcode when it should as the shield can handle almost any format. It incorrectly detects my tv’s model not the shield. I absolutely am running it on the shield, the tv does not have wifi connected and I know its running on android.

  1. Debug level logging is needed to see more detailed information.
Please re-enable, restart Plex Media Server, then pull the log files when the problem re-occurs.
    Do not enable verbose logging.
    Settings → Server_Name → General + Show Advanced

  1. What happens when you play the anime using the Shield?
Does the video play, play w/o subtitles, not play at all, etc.?

  2. Why burn subtitles = always instead of automatic?
Plex recently added SSA/ASS support to the Android TV client. They should render correctly without burning. PGS & SRT subtitles should also work without burning.

  3. The “unable to find client profile” is only generated when that client is running, so at some point, the Plex app on the Vizio was launched. However, you can ignore the message. It is essentially noise. Plex no longer uses client profile files for many clients. However, the software still logs an error when one is not present.

  4. Log messages for the Shield are not present because debug level logging is disabled.

I dont see vizio anymore, but do see shield

  1. attached
  2. Burn subtitles “always” → if I dont select transcode, it spins for a while and errors out. If I force 480p transcode it will play.
  3. sigh. I will try this but honestly every time I have heard this is fixed it is not fixed.
  4. This seems to have disappeared or lost in the logs. It shows SHIELD all caps now.

edit 3: setting burned subtitles to automatic fixed the issue. That being said, burn always will result in unplayable video every time. The only fix for this is forcing a lower resolution video feed.
