I’ve just signed up for Plex with an annual pass and want my money back. I’ll be sending a request through your system shortly. I joined because I have people happy to share shows and movies, which is great, but that’s available to me for free. I assumed the Plex Pass gave me access to their own available shows and movies WITHOUT ADVERTISING because nowhere during the FAQs or the sign up process is advertising mentioned. AT ALL. This is very misleading, if not illegal. The level of advertising (high sound or not) is hugely over the top. It makes your shows unwatchable and I gave up part way through the first one I watched. Very, very disappointing.

Why ads? Will having a Plex Pass remove them?
Our goal is to bring a wide assortment of content—from big studios, independent producers, and more—from around the globe to you for free. In exchange, we’re asking for a bit of your time to watch some ads. Even so, you can expect a notably lower ad-to-content ratio than you’d experience with typical broadcast television.
Since ad revenue is how the studios and distributors get paid, having a Plex Pass will not remove ads or reduce their frequency.
Are you putting ads into my personal content?
Absolutely not! That would be a really terrible idea for many, many reasons. Your media collection—including your recorded movies and tv shows, home videos, photos, music collection, and more—will continue to stream to all of your devices ad-free.

The “Free to Use” Parts: The Server and Apps
There are some details to get into, but the summary of “free” is simple:
- …
- Our ‘Movies & TV’ streaming service is free to all users and ad-supported.

It does but you also don’t need a Plex Pass to get the same thing.
The ads you are seeing are from watching Plex supplied free media not your friend’s media.
I realise that. I went through the entire process of paying for Plex Pass without once seeing any reference to the fact that I’d be bombarded with advertising for watching available content. Now I can’t see the point in having a pass at all. I will read through how it actually benefits me when I get a minute and make a decison then on whether I paid money for nothing and should request a refund.
There are advantages of having Pass.
Plex Pass and ads in the free content aren’t related at all. That’s why you didn’t see any reference to ads.
You can watch the same free media without Plex Pass.
Like everything in life, free always comes at a cost. In this case the cost is ads. The same as Youtube.
I find them annoying too so I don’t watch them. It’s one of the reasons I cut the cord to begin with.
Apparently this is my misunderstanding. The difference isn’t/wasn’t clear at all - probably like most people I’m a busy person who didn’t take the time required to read through the entire FAQs or a host of other pages in order to understand that I’d be bombarded with advertising if I watched the content. Most streaming accounts that you pay for dont have advertising - the point of paying for it. So, you live and learn.
That’s why I included the link “What is Plex” in my post above. This is pretty much the first set of information showing on their home page.

Did you buy a lifetime pass or monthly, annual?
An annual pass, as stated in my original post. Hahah - you’re guilty of not reading everything, like me!
I read your original post over an hour ago then read other unrelated posts.
I also didn’t buy anything from you.
One huge benefit is any client apps are Free during annual subscription.
To explain, most forum members are Collectors, just like myself. I collect movies and TV shows and share with friends around the globe… I also use a plex DVR to record shows which Plex removes the ads.
My Wife and Family watch on there TV or Mobile Device, it just amazing to have most of our Home entertainment in one place and no ads. As for Plex’s Free Movies and TV, I have that turned off.
I don’t think 0.61 seconds is that bad to find out if the main feature you want in a product is contained in your purchase
Ads from YouTube might be removed if you pay for it but not for YouTube TV.
You know what happens when you assume
Thanks for your input. The thing is, I did pay, and ads were not removed. I assumed that was the point of paying. It was not. The fact that this is how previous streaming options I’ve looked at work, was the basis of my assumption. I see no problem with assuming - all people assume based on experience. Most of the time its quite valid. Not this time however. We live and learn.
I think the point people are making is you didn’t have to assume the answer is easily available.
As you said in your first post, there is no mention of ads at all. That would have been the time to ask.
Ah well, it’s only a year. Do some research on the other benefits of Plex Pass. You may find it’s worth it.
The advertising is atrocious!
Seven or more at a time, multiple adds from the same advertiser play sequentially, some adds are completely out of focus or the resolution is incorrect.
Free or not, Its enough to turn a viewer off Plex forever!
