Hi, I’m on iOS 11 (not sure if that is part of the problem) and just turned on the Plex Camera Upload today. When i go into the uploaded folder, the pictures seem to be in a .HEIC format. It seems like Plex doesn’t know what to do with these. Is there something on the horizon where Plex will know how to handle/display them? Thanks, Donnie
hi dballiet,
I already started a Feature Request for the new Format. See https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/280122/feature-request-support-heif-format-in-photo-library-open-standard-equivalent-to-apples-live-phot#latest
Perhaps we need to push that somehow:-)?
Thanks! I didn’t see that because HEIC didn’t pull up any search results. I voted your request up.
It’d ne nice to get a Feedback from a Plex Employee regarding this issue… In not even a week iOS11 is released…
But perhaps they are already working on it:-)
Plex doesn’t usually comment on what they’re working on or their schedule.
We’re aware of this issue and working on it! We just posted a notice about this here: Notice: HEIF in iOS 11 and Camera Upload
The work around listed in the “Notice: HEIF in iOS 11 and Camera Upload” does not show up for me on my device (iphone 6).

I noticed the same thing. I believe HEIF is not supported on iPhone 6. I’ll update that post.
Updated the post with some additional info… confirmed HEIF and the issue itself is only valid for iOS 11 for iPhone 7, 8, and X.
If you’re not using an iPhone 7 or later, or the latest generation of iPad Pro models, your devices won’t capture photos or videos using this new format. If you do have a new model, you can choose how to handle these formats via different settings in the Settings app. (And iOS 11 doesn’t dig back through your archive and re-encode your old files in these new formats.)
