IOS 4k HDR Sync?

Latest version of plex and ios. Can direct play a 4k file no problem but when I want to sync the file then conversion starts?? Why? Any workaround?

Should let the app browse local files and play downloaded files at least. I downloaded the file through safari and have no way of opening through plex.

Any dev/employee feedback here?

Is this forum being monitored by anyone from the plex team? Paid product that isn’t performing as advertised and it’s been over a week with no acknowledgment.

Thanks for the prompt response. I was able to successfully sync the shows during my travels.

Thanks for the updates to the app! This feature still does not work! Awesome. Have to use a 3rd party program to watch any content I want to sync. Glad I paid for the PlexPass.

Sorry to be snarky but the fact that NO dev has responded to this post asking a legitimate question. Why can a 3rd party application play synced content totally fine but Plex has to for some reason transcode; take several hours, breaks HDR??

That’s not quite how Plex works. My first thought would be to try VLC for files downloaded separately.

For online playback, the client Plex app and the Plex server communicate and determine what combination of container, dimensions, codecs, bitrate, subtitles, etc., are supported.

For Sync, the Plex server produces a highly compatible, lowest-common-denominator file. It uses a device-specific XML profile to look up capabilities for the device family, not the specific device.

Note that Sync can be initiated from a web browser or other device, not just the Sync target. So it can’t interrogate the specific device, and has to be able to make these assumptions.

There are various threads discussing modification of the XML profiles. I’ve used this myself to add Sync support for HEVC for iOS.

I also agree that it would be a nice feature/improvement, when initiating a Sync from the client itself, to better identify the client’s capabilities.

It does work this way on Android from what I understand.

The xml modification never worked for me but in any case it’s been over 4+ years now of people complaining about sync being terrible. We shouldn’t have to be modifying anything, function should be built in. Or a preference area when syncing to select the device you’re using.

VLC also sadly doesn’t work well on IOS. Infuse 6 is the best one I’ve tested so far.

Maybe instead of releasing new game features no one wants, the team can fix the silly sync issues?

This does not work on Android either. Mobile Sync is an old feature and was around before 4K/hevc/hdr was popular. It was designed to download a generic copy that would play regardless what device was being used. It doesn’t know what your device can actually do. Plex is hoping to update the mobile sync feature to allow syncing more codecs.

Thank you for responding. It’s been months since someone has been which is why my frustrations were mounting.

Is there any eta? The sync feature is something people consistently complain about due to its lack of file support. I know right now people don’t travel as much but having files synced to your device is crucial especially when underground on a train or flying.

The annoying part is that the plex app CAN play the file normally so it seems that solution is pretty simple or at least give users the option to download entire file without conversion while you work on a more permanent solution.

Thanks.
