Plex for iOS will not upload photos automatically when the app is running in the background. When I have the app open and displayed on my iPhone 6s, the photos upload at a speed of 1-2 photos per second. But if I simply press the phone’s home button and let the app run in the background, the uploading stops. I can wait 5-10 minutes on the home screen, and when I go back into the app, it hasn’t uploaded a single additional picture since I initially pressed the home button.
As it stands now, the only way for me to actually upload my photos is to disable screen lock on my phone and not use my phone for anything else while the photos upload. Anyone have a fix/workaround for this? Thanks!
Greetings. This issue has already been filed internally and is being tracked by the Apple dev team. Sorry, but I don’t have any further updates on the investigation for this issue at this time.
I spoke with an iOS engineer about this and I’m told it requires a reasonably significant engineering effort. It requires doing something like silent-push notifications to Camera Upload users where plex.tv would send the app a ping and start uploading files. That’s not to say that the team is not interested in implementing the capability, it just hasn’t been pushed to the top of the stack yet. We agree it’s important to implement, as it would make Camera Upload significantly more useful, so we’re advocating to get it pushed up in priority.
