iOS HD output via DAC (feature request)

Khadas Tone 2 Pro would be a good example.

Though potential 16-bit LSB bit-perfect would still be nice for those of us with higher end MQA Full Decode + Render DAC’s.

Well, let us know if it works  I refer to it as ā€œbit-perfect-ishā€. Might be good enough to turn lights purple, I just don’t know. You’d of course have to turn off loudness leveling, sweet-fades, EQ…

I’m interested to know quite what ā€œbitperfect-ishā€ means  Any indication of timelines for all this? It’s all sounding good for improving plex as an audiophile music server platform.

okay, so I saw this pic on reddit and wanted to flag it here as I’d really love to see something in future plex/plexamp that allows the user to understand that they are or are not getting the full benefit of any HD audio files they have. Oftentimes it can be hard to tell from the equipment and having the software confirm it for you would be great.

Another great example here.

Looks like it’s in, but not perfect yet. It’s a little too cumbersome to record but there are instances where it doesn’t switch sample rate and they don’t appear to be random. I have two albums by Beach House that are at 48/24 and tracks from one will switch my DAC (SMSL SU-9) to 48k and one will not. If I load up a non-switching track and force quit then open Plexamp back up, it will always successfully switch the sample rate to match.

We’ll need a bit more data than that. Like logs, or a description of what you’re doing.

Thanks very much for implementing this!
I’ve just spent 5 mins testing on an M1 ipad pro, using a chord mojo dac. I’ve loaded up a number of songs and I’ve certainly seen the sample rate switching, but I’ve also noticed a couple of times it ends up getting stuck at a particular samplerate and then no matter what you play, it enters the DAC at that rate. so far I’ve seen it on a 96khz track and on a 44khz track.
That said, when you kill plexamp and then restart it, it goes back to switching again.
not sure what’s causing it or how I collect relevant info.
PS. I was pleased to see that DSD is changed to PCM at an appropriate sample rate depending on the original DSD sample rate

After stopping playback? Or are you queueing up new tracks during playback. Remember, the switching only occurs opportunistically.

oh, okay. I think I had been starting new tracks while the old one was still playing… maybe that’s it. I’ll try a bit more and see how it goes.
incidentally, why not change sample rate even if the old song is playing? i.e. quickly stop, change the rate and restart, or is it due to some inbuilt features like fades or something?

Exactly.

okay, I understand. Is there any chance we could have a switch which allows sweet fades etc when possible (ie when the sample rate is the same) but when it’s not the same, it would stop, change the rate and then restart?

I think the ā€˜opportunistic sweet fades’ is an awesome idea! I ALWAY want my DAC to match the sample rate, but don’t care (much) about sweet fades. So I think a good option would be to force DAC rate matching, and then do opportunistic sweet fades if the sample rate between tracks is the same. Right now I’ve disabled the Plexamp sample rate matching, as its current form is totally useless for me. I fix my DAC sample rate at the OS level right now.

Appreciate all the feedback. This is a long trip and we’re only at the first few stops.

and I want to point out that we really appreciate the work that has gone on here. it’s already in a great position and we’re all looking forward to seeing how it develops from here. I’m sure we’ll have lots more feedback for you in time

FWIW, duplicate of Sample Rate Following on 3.7.0 not tracking after first track

Yeah - don’t pay them for that garbage (runs out of the room…)

I’m excited for this to happen. An idea: it would be great to have a quick toggle on the main playback screen that would turn off all features that break the native bitstream so we can flip between setups easily.

I use fades and normalization all the time when playing throughout the house, but I’d like to be able to put PlexAmp in ā€œHi-Res Modeā€ easily for critical listening. Maybe you touch the sample rate display and it changes color or something? Or have a ā€œBitperfectā€ toggle there?
