Oddly my iPhone plex app plays them no problem and my Nvidia shield plays them fine.

Yep, the device can direct play. I have video transcoding completely turned off on my server. These are files that had no problem playing in the past. The device specifically is a M4 iPad Pro. Since my iPhone 15 pro can direct play and the iPad could in the very recent past, something weird is going on. If you check out the Reddit post, you’ll see someone had files working and the same day updated Plex and the files stopped working.
I did update the server side today to the most recent that ixsystems has and there were no changes. iPhone and Nvidia shield are fine, and the iPad fails.
I assume the iPad OS app is not just a reskin of the iOS app, and my hunch makes me think it’s a bug with the iPad OS app. People are having trouble with the same thing on Apple TV top boxes as well though.
AFAIK, The same core is used for both with only the layout changing.
Which iPadOS are you running.
I’m having trouble with my iPad since its OS upgrade on a bunch of other apps as well.
My iPhone is on 18.2 and is OK. my iPad is 17.7.3 and not fairing so well.
I know nothing of the M4’s. The best I have here is a 2017 iPad 1st Gen and an iPhone 12
If they are the same core, I guess it could be on apple’s end. 18 definitely has been quite unstable all around for me, but this is definitely a new one. I was on 18.1 when the problem hit, but it was also working fine on 18.1 a week or two ago. I tried updating to 18.2 yesterday with no change before I updated Plex server side today. It would be odd to be an Apple thing when the issue popped up on a version that was working. The most recent change was a Plex app update, but people were having issues a few days before that hit.
Given the M4 is the new piece of the puzzle here, It “kinda makes sense” they have few kinks to work out. (it’s not the same Apple we used to know)
