Usually within an hour or two, but sometimes within the first few minutes. After the crash, the springboard is displayed, and a crash log is available.
When I play this same playlist using the web app (Safari), the app eventually fails in some way, but usually it takes a couple of days of continuous playback before this happens.
I have attached 32 crash logs from the iPhone app.
Tested on two iPhones:
