iPhone Plex App not showing home created extras

Server Version#:4.147.1
Player Version#:Unknown
I’m trying to resolve an issue with the Plex app on my iPhone. It refuses to recognize extras I’ve created for my home-made movies. These extras appear correctly in the Plex apps on my TV and iMac, but nothing shows up at all on the iPhone.

I’ve also tried uploading the movie into another library that I use for ripped DVDs. In that library, extras normally show up on my iPhone, but my personally created extras still don’t appear there.

The naming convention is correct, as the extras display properly on both the TV and the iMac. I’ve also enabled the “use local files” option (or whatever the exact setting is called), so I’m assuming the issue must be related to the Plex app on the iPhone itself.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and does anyone have any ideas on how to work around it?

Local extras don’t work on the ‘New Experience’ apps. They do on your TV and iMac because they haven’t been updated to that yet.

Thank you, TommyVD. Does this mean that when the other apps are updated, we’ll lose the extras entirely? It seems like any update should bring improvements rather than a downgrade.

My understanding is that this should be the intention.

Oh how I would like that to be true but we’re living in a world of vibe-coding and enshittification it seems. :sad_but_relieved_face: Plus from what I’ve heard the number of devs at Plex dedicated to local media can be counted on one hand. Those folks are doing their best of course but don’t expect changes to come fast.

The official apps are a bit of a mess right now. Certain things that worked in the older versions don’t work yet (although things are better than on release). Other features they plan to introduce like their new Metadata Agents don’t work properly in the new apps yet (for example Cast & Crew don’t show up yet using those) but work fine in the old ones.

Just ask the folks who are using Plex on Roku’s right now, they’ve been updated to this New Experience and it does feel a bit like an extended beta test for them

If extras are essential on iPhone for you why not try out Plezy? https://plezy.app/

At least until Plex gets their official apps up to snuff.

Extras show up fine in that app and it also has the downloads sorting many people are missing from the official apps.

Thank you, TommyVD. I’ve downloaded Plexy on my iPhone and—hey presto—the extras are now available. It’s so frustrating how technology is constantly changing. I’m not particularly tech-savvy, so when something works, I’d rather it stayed the same—especially when updates seem to remove features.

I’ve also had a message saying my main Plex app has an update, but since it was set up on a Raspberry Pi, I’m not sure how to access it to carry out the update. I’ve been told to ignore it if everything is working fine, and that’s probably sensible advice.

Many thanks for your help—it’s been very useful.

If there’s no critical security update included and no fixes and features that you need, that should be fine. :slightly_smiling_face:
