IPv6 and remote access (again) Should I leave Plex?

Server Version#:1.25.7.5604
Player Version#: Android 8.30.2.31202

Hi all,

My ISP recently forced me to be on an IPv6 + CGNAT IPv4 network.
I’m struggling since then to make my PMS reachable remotely, since CGNAT IPv4 is useless, I’m going to setup everything IPv6

  • I set my router firewall to open port 32400
  • I checked IPv6 server support in Plex settings
  • I am on an IPv6 network on my android device (checked https://ipv6-test.com/)

My server is unreachable from the remote android app :frowning:
I’ve read a lot about Plex not being IPv6 compatible yet (come on it’s 2022 !), is that so ?
I’ve also read about a hack by entering a URL from an XML file… tried it, it didn’t work and I don"t want a hack.

Can Plex support staff help me ?

I can help but you won’t like the answers.

  1. IPv6 support is only for your LAN.
  2. Engineering and Operations have not enabled IPv6 Remote Access (brokering)

I have a full IPv4 / IPv6 stack both internally and externally.

My IPv4 traffic leaves my router as IPv6 (DNS from the ISP). That works flawlessly

I cannot use IPv6 Plex.tv Remote Access even with my own domain (DDNS via CloudFlare).

At some point in the near future, my ISP will drop IPv4 support.
When that happens, I too will be cut off.

I’ve asked multiple times about this. No answer has been given.

Thanks Chuck,
after crawling the forums it seems you’re right and we’re facing the same sad situation.

Needless to say I find it apalling that in 2022, and since so many years, Plex hasn’t come to support IPv6. I’m a lifetime plexpass owner, been advertising Plex to my family for many years, now I have no choice but to leave and switch to an alternative solution, and probably leave my integrated Tidal subscription as well…

Sad, very sad…

You could ask your ISP for a publicly routable IPv4 address (doesn’t need to be a static one). Some ISPs seem to be open to such requests…

IPv6 remote access works only with Apple device.

Thanks guys for your hints I appreciate.

Well, asking my ISP to revert my entire internet access to IPv4 just because one of my services refuses to follow modern standards is not gonna be my option.
Nor buying an apple device or asking my entire family to do so.

This is not serious.
So long Plex, it was good while it lasted.

You can do it by using a reverse proxy (I’m using Caddy, but Traefik or nginx work too) on the same machine as your Plex server + your own domain. It’s not ‘elegant’ but it works.
