IronWolf 4TB vs 6TB hard drives

I will soon purchase a Synology 1019+ and am deciding whether to go with 4TB or 6TB drives. The main use of this NAS will be movie storage and playback. My question to you experienced Plex users is whether there is any negatives to going with the 7200 RPM of the 6TB over the 5900 RPM of the 4TB drives.
Any advise is greatly appreciated.

To offer second hand info, having received feedback from one user who uses Iron Wolf: they drives are very noisy.

The user complained that he could clearly hear the head steppers ā€œclackingā€ from track to track in his brand new QNAP.

He regretted getting them and would have prefferred the WD Red Pro drives.

Thanks for the response. I was leaning toward the 6TB already I just wanted to hear that the extra RPM wouldn’t be a negative ny created too much heat.
Do you know if it would be worth it to put in two NVMe cards in the extra slots that the Synology 1019+ provides? Does movie playback use this? I will have some 4K movies in the collection.
Thanks

Thanks for that info. I don’t think it will affect me unless it is really loud as they will be inside a closet, not in the room where the tv is located.

If the drives are not in the viewing area then they’re unlikely to bother.
This user had the NAS sitting in the same room with the TV.

The reason for wanting to use the Ironwolf drives above others is simply that Synology recommends them to use in their NAS.

Please be careful of the term ā€œrecommendedā€.
Drives MUST be ā€œNASā€ drives (with T.L.E.R. - Time Limited Error Recovery) in the firmware.

Synology also recommends Western Digital.

The complete list of Tested and Approved drives can be found below.

I have replaced every (failed - 4) Seagate with WDs (Reds most recently) and will never buy a Seagate drive again as long as I live.

I’ve lost 2 WD drives in 20 years (not reds - and were ancient), but both of them survived long enough to recover their contents. When a SeaGate goes around here - we have the funeral - and we won’t be having any more.

Im fascinated why your above post was flagged.
Three possible reasons ?

  1. You since edited something deeply offensive.
  2. You dared to veer slightly off topic with a recommendation of an enclosure for your personal drive preference.
  3. You dared to suggest a liking (if not preference) for Seagate drives in a thread specifically about Seagate drives.

The Horror…

If I had 10 of them, I’d give 'em to somebody I don’t like, but they all blew up.

Censorship blows, no matter what - unless name-calling was involved…and I got a few choice names for Seagate I’ll share, if you’re interested…lol.

It’s strange the amount of hate Seagate receives on the Internet; most empirical data I’ve seen show their drives to be similar in reliability to Western Digital (and others). But it’s the anecdotal stories which promulgate the idea that they’re somehow less reliable.

I went in the opposite direction…
For years I only used WD RED drives and I have a lot of them (still do)…
Till they started failing and WD wouldn’t replace them… The so called warranty starts when the drive was manufactured not when you bought it.

I didn’t even know I was flagged, thanks for telling me. Well, it wasn’t #1, I’ve said nothing offensive and I’ve not edited any posts I’ve made. It must be #2 and/or #3.
I did mention that I was looking at a certain enclosure and I did mention a certain drive. But isn’t that was this forum is for? I am simply a person who has been researching setting up a home NAS by reading lots of articles and asking questions. I do not work for nor trying to sell anything so I find it strange that I would be flagged for mentioning a certain brand. How am I supposed to get my questions answered if I don’t mention the types of products I am looking at.
If that is the reason the administrator flagged my post then please tell me so I can make sure to never use this forum again.
The strange thing is that I’m definitely going to (or was going to) set up a Plex and aren’t they running this forum ?

I’m pretty stumped as well!

So to answer…

  1. I edited the the post to add an additional link for a product that can be found cheaper else where! Surely this cannot be it?

  2. ā€œSlightly off topicā€ is an understatement!

  3. I simply pointed out… a) I have 4x said drives… b) Excepting 1 of them, they have all been fine!.. Such that others can see a users experience of said drives.

So, if an admin can please tell my why my post was hidden, I’d REALLY like to know!

Don’t believe everything you read…

Every single, solitary Seagate I’ve ever owned has blown straight up. Mushroom Cloud, Man. Gone. History. Dust.

I’ve still got every WD drive I’ve ever owned, except the two I recovered data from - through the ā€˜Ribbon Cables’ they were hooked up by (Yea, they were kinda old) and both of 'em survived long enough for me to recover their data - and put them on WD Reds.

No need.
I cant remenmber how long ago it was but Seagate had a deserved bad rep.
As my media grew I was heavily invested in what turned out to be a particularly gruesome model of 4TB Seagate drive.
I had 10 of them and 8 showed issues after a year or two. But in perspective I has 3 WD’s over two years. One still works.
But the later model Seagates at 8, 10 and 12TB ran without issue for 3 to 4 years. Times change. (Coincidentally in the non raid version of the same dock in the flagged post.)

I don’t; I’m using it to back up my positive experience with their drives.

Pretty sure youre not allowed to do that in a topic about Seagate drives.

Wait… do I need to invent more words to describe how badly Seagates suck?

Here’s a few:

Cornbinder - if you’ve never lived on a farm, or bound any corn, you might not know the sound I’m talking about, but you don’t want it on your desktop. A Silo might be OK, but I don’t have any of those on the desktop.

A Sparkler:
Most often enjoyed by Children (or their drunk parents when they stick the cold end up - you know where and say: ā€œHold my Beer and get the cameraā€) at the 4th of July celebration - where ever you happen to be.

Hand Grenade:
Used to clear out a room of baddies - when you don’t know who’s on the other side of the door and you’re pretty sure they’re all armed…

So therefore Plex now sucks cos I really hated the UI of the clients 3 years ago?
As i said times change.
