Is Anyone at Plex looking at doing something like MoviesAnywhere.com?

I’ve also done the trick of having a small file that shows me which movie service I have the content in. At least I won’t forget about that time I bought a movie in some service that I haven’t used since.

But fully integrating Movies Anywhere as one of the partner retailers would be incredible, though. I love Plex for the concept and the interface, but I virtually never use it because of subscription streaming platforms (a different question) and digital purchases instead. If Plex could add MA support, it would be a really compelling argument to get me to open it more often.

I agree with the sentiment here. A great first step would be to list & link the movies. The second step would be streaming them directly within Plex. And what would make it perfect would being able to download and play the DRM file.

I don’t understand how the laws are written for this kind of thing, however I do know that Plex and movies anywhere are very similar in nature so therefore linking Plex to movies anywhere seems like that wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea for a plugin there’s probably some kind of DRM that they have to look at. I would love would love to see them hook plex up to things like Hulu Netflix and specifically movies anywhere because according to what I’ve read I own the DRM for those specific movies that I’ve already bought so therefore there shouldn’t be a DRM issue in general they’re my movies. but I realize that when it comes to DRM they have to be very very careful

I don’t think I want the entire Hulu or Netflix library showing up in my Plex libraries. But definitely movies registered on MoviesAnywhere would be nice. Especially if they could link back to the actual movie for playback.

However, not all movies and zero TV shows sync with MoviesAnywhere, so it would be nice if the main services like Vudu, Google Movies & TV, and Amazon Prime could integrate directly. When viewing a movie’s page in Plex they could add some branded play buttons for each service below the poster perhaps.

I’m looking for a way to link the to libraries as well. If anyone has any suggestions for doing ourselves I’m all ears. I’m not sure how open the API’s are so it’s just a thought.

Thanks!

According to MoviesAnywhere tech support they don’t have an API for export or synchronization of a users movie collection list.

So, I presume if there is an API of any type it is only for partner stores.

Maybe it’s not the business they want to be in, but perhaps Plex could become a partner store for MoviesAnywhere themselves. Or alternatively do a deal with them to front-end MoviesAnywhere instead—meaning they wouldn’t need to be a reselling partner, but could refer sales as MoviesAnywhere does, and forward sales to whichever reseller the user wants, but still be able to sync the user’s content into Plex.

It’d be a new type of MoviesAnywhere partner, but not unlike what Roku does with Fandango being their resident Movie Store, though it’d be nice if Plex could be a bit more agnostic and do it in a way where the user picks the reseller vendor of their choice, but get’s the MoviesAnywhere synced content displayed and cataloged in Plex.

Even with all of this, rather than delivering/playing the content themselves, they could pass it off to the Reseller app of choice —iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, etc.—for playback on the device or the web depending on the users setup.

This is not unlike how Apple’s centralized Apple TV app works with cataloging TV shows and Movies and passing you off to the various apps for playback, etc.

This would take Plex up to the next level for me. We don’t watch a lot of our Movies Anywhere (vudu) content just simply because its just another app to launch. Too many apps. Plex needs to be my central app.
Fingers crossed.

I voted for this as I would love to be able to at least see my Movies Anywhere (MA) library from my Plex Media Server (PMS), even if it was just a placeholder to show me I do already “own” that movie. Plex, can we please have some form of MoviesAnywhere integration??

For example, I have Guardians of the Galaxy on my PMS and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on MA. It is a bit annoying to need to know which service to go; I use PMS for almost everything but have a few digital movies in MA.

I suppose a workaround to this would be to build a custom “connector” on my server that connects to Movies Anywhere and makes empty files for the movies I have there and adds a tag “MoviesAnywhere” to the title description.

From a quick search, I found a script someone on another Plex post made to create a CSV for movies on VUDU, which shares content with MoviesAnywhere - this could easily be used to generate “empty” files with the correct file names which perhaps TinyMediaManager could then quickly restructure in to the proper folder structure. Sounds like a mini project.

This other thread says it very well although for some reason it was considered a duplicate to this one:

I created a couple clips and collection posters for Google Play and Vudu if anyone wants them.

Interesting development… hopefully MoviesAnywhere is being considered in this mix as well…

add me to the list. This is a feature that would take plex to that next level, and further make it attractive to those users that primarily house their libraries already through multiple accounts. It’d be beneficial to moviesanywhere as well as they’d enjoy significantly more accounts created from a passionate plex fanbase

This is great that finally some activity on this topic lately. It’s been a couple of years since I posted on this but the recent direction that Plex is taking makes me think this is even more relevant today.

At this point I don’t even care of MoviesAnywhere service specifically - if Plex integrates with that or simply starts to provide same functionality instead. The idea is the same. Let me access my online purchased content via Plex. Seems to be where they are heading anyway.

I recently noticed that I can access all of my purchased content via iTunes or Google Play. Not sure if MoviesAnywhere had anything to do with that or not, but clearly this is something that Plex can (I think) do relatively easily.

We just need more activity here and hopefully get some momentum? I still would like to see (and stream) all my movies in Plex, regardless where they are hosted.

+1 - I don’t even have to watch my streaming movies on Plex; I’d just like a list of the ones I own and what service I can watch them on. I’d hate to buy something I didn’t realize I already bought on a different platform.

You can sort of make that work manually.

yep looking for something along these lines myself. Only watch my DVR shows in PLEX nowadays and watch everything else on the streaming services. (Netflix, Crave…). I pretty much use PLEX just to track watched/unwatched and if that could be made easier without using physical files all the time that would be helpful.

+1 would love to see support for Movies Anywhere when looking at my movies. I have a mix of videos from different regions and indie film makers that will likely never be supported by the bigger services, so if I could have a single pane of glass for both, that would be an amazing experience. Plus, if I could offload 50% of my library to MA… my NAS would be eternally grateful.

I am looking for something similar too. I have a bunch of content on Vudu and I’ve linked movies anywhere too. However movies “anywhere” actually means anywhere in the country you purchased the movie (typically the USA). I cannot access my Vudu content outside of the USA. So I want to put it on my plex server so I can access my content in any country.

That is slightly different that what most people were thinking here. I think most are thinking MoviesAnywhere would connect with Plex and provide shortcuts back to the web stream.

What you really need, probably all of us need, is legislation that says perpetually licensed digital movie purchases need to have a legal method for the user to make a personal backup.

Incidentally that would probably solve this whole problem without a need to link things together.

You can’t access media with DRM - like VUDU - with Plex - anywhere in the universe. Period.
Not now, not later.
DRM is a show stopper.

I guess, at this point, you can consider those VUDU purchases ‘rentals’ - and your lease has expired. Unfortunately.
