Is it possible to have 2 versions of a movie in a folder for different clients?

Sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong spot. Is it possible to have 2 versions of a movie in a folder for different clients and to perhaps tag them in some way that plex will know when a certain client connect what file to stream?

For instance H.265 movies. Would it be possible to have a h.264 version and a H.265 version in the folder and when a client that plex knows doesn’t support H.265 it will stream the H.264 file instead. If so can someone point me in the right direction to how to set this up?

Like a 1080p and a 720p or even a 480p, yes, it sure is. But then the client has to choose the “Play Version” to get the right resolution. That is until we get bitrate limits for the users. (At least the hope is there that we can force a specific bitrate version to be played and not the highest transcoded down.) Then, in theory, the server should pick the best copy based on the limits set for that user ID.

I have several movies done this way, as well as a lot of the TV shows I maintain. So I can have a lower resolution for remote streaming and a higher resolution for local streaming on an HD TV.

I did test this once upon a time, setting my Android tablet up for a 480 and it seemed to be that the 480p version Direct Played and not the 1080p transcoded. But that was right after the OM feature came out, and there have been some changes since then. It’s not hard to find out, though. Set the client to the appropriate resolution, and play. Watch the CPU usage on the server to see if it’s transcoding or Direct Playing.

My thoughts are this should work the same for codecs supported, too, but not 100% sure. I don’t have anything that supports H265 natively, so can’t test it. There aren’t a lot of devices that support it, and those that do are more expensive than I am willing to spend for an upgrade.
