I downloaded the program and install it. Turn off my computer and the little icon is no where to be found. My question, is Plex still running in the background to record my shows and let me watch something in another room.?
I guess you’re running your server on Windows?
If the PMS icon isn’t showing in your system tray, the server isn’t running. If it’s not running, it won’t record and you won’t be able to stream media from it on your devices.
After starting the server, you can configure it from the system tray to start automatically on login.

This made me laugh. I think they mean they restarted their computer and the server didn’t start with windows.
I’ll be pretty impressed when Plex can run without a powered on server.
To be fair, I think the fact that Plex is a self-hosted service that allows for Netflix-like media isn’t emphasized enough, and too much focus on server-less media (free with ads), with not enough separation between the two.
I prefer product descriptions and web pages written by engineers, not marketers. Marketers are masters at making plain oatmeal sound like it’s the best thing since sex.
