Is it still true that changing files has to be manually re-analyzed?

When Plex automatically scans for files does it now check modification time? Like, let’s say you edited or removed some tracks but kept the filename. Previously, it would give you an error if you tried to play that file again. This was very common when you converted from H264 to H265 many years ago, and it was understood that the best way is to rename the files because the simple scans don’t re-analyze them for changes.

Is this all still true? or was this never true?

Btw, I know “re-analyze” is part of regular maintenance. Is that when it re-analyzes files that have changed? How does it select which files to re-analyze?

If the media is local,

-and-

“Automatically scan when changes detected” is enabled

-then-

Replacing the file will automatically trigger the scan, which will see it’s a new file, and it will be reanalyzed.

If the media is on a NAS/remote, it will be scanned & updated when

  1. Manually triggered
  2. Period scan runs
  3. Maintenance runs
