Is PMP finally dead?

PMP has stopped being able to play any of my Media.

I just get “An Error occurred trying to play” when I try and play any media.

It was working fine recently , but has suddenly stopped. I can’t remember exactly the last time I played something using it, but am sure it was within a few weeks.

(I have download the last version from the website today just to check, and that will not play anything either.)

Yeah, I know it is old, but after the outcry of it being canned, it was supposed to continue working, with fixes to keep it working without any additional features… and it is (was) still my favourite player on desktop.

I have tried on 2 different computers, as well as trying to play stuff from various servers, and nothing works.

Supposedly it’s not yet dead… though as you pointed out it hasn’t been updated for quite some time and its successor has been around for quite some time as a preview (Plex HTPC).

I just unearthed my install to reproduce your experience. The app had some hiccup getting the stream going on the 1st go (endless spinner, so I had to stop and go back to the home page) but everything streamed as expected and immediately afterwards. So I guess it’s still working.

I still use it regularly, mostly for music.

Working perfectly fine this evening, and I am on PMS version 1.24.1.4931.

However still not prepared to update PMS beyond this just yet, as there have been some pretty major issues with music library metadata, so cannot vouch for any PMS version beyond 1.24.1.4931…

hmm, so after a few launches the v4.29.2 does seem to play stuff.

but anything older it seems will no longer play anything. oh well, shame. I loved not having to use the uno interface.

I guess I knew it would happen at some point.

Might try spinning up another docker with an older server version and see if the old version of PMP works with an older server version.

As it does not work with 1.24.3.5033

Well if this is definitely the case, I can pretty much guarantee this is gonna cause some consternation on the forums!

BTW… @blim5001 … Don’t go backwards… Keep going forwards… The new HTPC app is pretty darn good :+1:

So I’ve just installed PMS version 1.24.3.5033 on my test server and PMP still works just fine.

But now reading back over your post…

The last release of PMP (Plex Media Player) was 2.58.0.1076, so what client are you actually talking about?

oops, sorry the latest release I have that will play stuff is 2.58.0.1076

The older Preview versions of Plex Media Player, 3.0.0.24 (pre uno) and 3.0.0.32 (uno) will not play stuff anymore. (and they did a few weeks ago)

yeah, I know but I am just an old git, and liked it the way it was…
They keep removing stuff from the web app to make it harder to use for managing the servers (duplicate badges and grid view options to name but 2) and the Android TV app is shall we say somewhat less than perfect…

For someone with multiple servers, many with duplicate content I find the uno interface a bit of a pain and requires loads more clicking around to get the job done.

Edit:

So this seems really odd, the old (v3.0.0.24) still works on some of my servers but not others and these seems to be no consistency on what the difference is.

e.g.

Server 1:
PMS v1.24.4.5081
Dedicated server (native install)
Shows as Remote
Has custom cert
----- Playback Fails

Server 2 -
PMS v1.24.3.5033
Dedicated server (plexinc docker, network bridge)
Shows as Remote
Has custom cert
----- Playback Fails

Server 3 -
PMS v1.24.4.5081
iMac (local native install)
Shows as Nearby
No custom cert
----- Playback Works

Server 4 -
PMS v1.24.3.5033
Nas (plexinc docker, network macvlan)
Shows as Nearby
No custom cert
----- Playback Fails

Server 5 -
PMS v1.24.3.5033
Nas (plexinc docker, network bridge)
Shows as Remote
Has custom cert
----- Playback Works

Server 6 -
PMS v1.24.3.5033
Nas (plexinc docker, network bridge)
Shows as Nearby
No custom cert
----- Playback Fails

But I can download media from all of them… so it’s not like the media files are unavailable.

Can see I am going to have to go poking around in log files to see if I can find any clues.

Edit 2:

so nothing obvious in the server logs, but the player is reporting a cert problem, which was where I thought the issue might be, due to the recent root cert expiry issue.

Now just need to work out what the difference is between the servers that work and the ones that don’t. As the Server with a custom cert on the Nas that works and the Servers on the dedicated server that don’t both have certs that were created before the 30th Sept.

Well I found a ‘fix’ that makes me happy.

I just replaced the desktop folder in the webclient folder on
v2.58.0.1076 with the one from v3.0.0.24

And playback is all good and the web interface is back the way I like it.

(I can easily see which files have duplicates, without having to delve into an item to see if they do and have the different view options for folders)
