Is the WD PR4100 pretty much worthless when it comes to using Plex?

I’ve had Plex on my computer for a couple years now, no issues, so I’d like to think I’m pretty used to how the service works…However, after Plex hyped the MyCloud PR4100, I grabbed one, got everything set up and ready to go, and nothing works to stream. I can pull up all my media on any device from the 4100, but streaming? No. Movies load to 99%, drop down to 13% and reload back to 99% over and over, but never get to 100%. TV shows will, on very rare occasions, stream for a minute or two before flipping over to the loading screen. The MyCloud firmware is up to date. The Plex server on the PR4100 needs to be updated, but it won’t do it automatically, it says it needs to be done manually. I’m not the brightest when it comes to computers, but I found instructions for installing Plex updates manually, and they failed every time. I’ve contacted Western Digital about this, and they keep blaming it on Plex…
So, for any of you with some knowledge and experience here, what do you recommend? Will getting a manual Plex update installed actually fix all of my streaming problems, or does it sound like my machine is hosed? Should I just uninstall the Plex Media Server from the PR, then start from scratch? Like I said, there’s a huge chance I’m just too technologically retarded to figure this out on my own, but if the server actually IS faulty, man, that was a big chunk of change that I’d love to get returned/exchanged.
Thanks for any help/advice/consideration.

After last two updates, the pr4100 actually became a quite decent Plex server. I had no major issues playing my content. What exactly is your issue with update? You should download latest Plex package for pr4100, then login to pr4100 management. First make sure you have latest firmware (2.30.172), wd plugged some serious security holes with that one. Then go to the apps panel, under “App store” banner there is a small link “install app manually”. Click and select the Plex package you have downloaded previously. A pop-up will be displayed asking if you want to update/reinstall Plex, click yes. And that should be it. Where does it fail for you?

I’m not trying to hijack this thread, but I updated to 2.30.172 yesterday and ever since I can’t get the Plex app to load. I have rebooted, I had turned off the app, turned it back on, nothing. Everything else is functioning on my pr4100, except for the Plex app. When I try to execute /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/plexmediaserver/start.sh it gives me the error " Plex Media Server is already running. Will not start…"

But, if I go to /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/plex_conf/Plex Media Server/Logs/Plex Media Server.log, the last entry is from yesterday. Any ideas?

*Edit - After the 4th or 5th reboot, it has magically fixed itself. I’m wondering if the /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/plex_conf/Plex Media Server/plexmediaserver.pid had something to do with it, because the PID value was used by another process before…

Like @corwin_x said, updates are super simple. Just 2-steps.

Try the above, you should be fine. I’ve been running the PR4100 as a server since June and it’s been pretty fantastic. No problem with friends streaming my content to their houses while I’m recording and watching something at home.

I had this problem- for me the solution was to go to the Plex web site, go to downloads and select the correct download for my device. Had same issue on my PR4100 and EX4100 not connecting
but the web site download fixed it. dont use the update link within the app itself, for me it never works and gives the unable to connect message . hope that helps
