Plex Beta and WD MyCloud PR4100

Latest Beta version (in the 1.15 series) for WD MyCloud PR4100 breaks check for update!

After manually installing the latest Beta version of Plex on my WD MyCloud PR4100, the PR4100 will now constantly send notifications that a new version of Plex is available and needs to be updated.

The version in PR4100 is old but since the newest Plex is now broken and either does NOT properly answer or is not answering correctly when PR4100 checks for updates available, this will be come an irritating issue for PR4100 owners.

Reloading Plex, PR4100 firmware or anything else will NOT correct this issue! This is a Plex issue not a WD issue.

The only way to now correct the odd behavior is the following:

  1. Turn off the Beta check in Plex and return to Public.

  2. Download the latest Public version of Plex for PR4100 and manually install through the WD interface.

  3. Restart WD MyCloud PR4100 and all should once again work as expected.

Messages will no longer generate, no more emails (if you have this on) and no more conflicts!

Of course, now you will no longer be offered the latest and greatest as you have set Plex back to Public releases but which is worse?

Constant messages telling you to update something that is already up to date and your PR4100 thinking it has an issue or… No more Plex Betas?

Hope this helps others as I have seen this issue throughout the board.

Since Plex has shown well, lets say… A slow response to its’ users in the past, I don’t see a quick correction for the latest Beta issue with PR4100 but I guess we can hope right?

Note: Since updating Plex on the PR4100 is so simple, you could wait a while and see if a later Beta does function correctly and go back to the Beta side of things by simple turning it back on in Plex and download newest and update your PR4100 manually… Which is really what you should be doing anyway and not depending on WD to update as they do not appear to often.
