Is there a problem with 4k support for Xbox One S ?

@Wiidesire Yes I do! So we actually haven’t seen much improvement in the codecs/resolutions the S supports. Just like the non-S model the XBox One S does not support direct playback of 4K h264 content. I will update the player profile for the XBox One to transcode anything >1080p for h264 streams which will fix your issue.

@Moussa Bummer! At least UHD H.265 8-bit and UHD H.265 10-bit is working. Better than nothing.

Thanks for the update

edit:
I wonder if the new Decoder in the Xbox One S doesn’t support UHD H.264 8-bit or if it’s just a software limitation of their modified Windows 10 operating system.

It’s always been the case that the Xbox One could not play back UHD h264 content. The player should trigger an error though, and the app will fall back to a 1080p transcode but for some reason some videos don’t trigger that error. If you want to playback those videos you’ll need to lower the quality to 1080p before playback.

@Moussa well the Xbox One couldn’t even output UHD (2160p). They could have supported it with the HDMI 1.4 bandwidth @ 30 Hz but they didn’t. The Xbox One also didn’t have a H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoder instead they used a software solution which caused substantially more power draw and didn’t handle high bitrates very well.
The Xbox One S got a new decoder to “natively” support 2160p H.265 8- and 10-bit decoding. The question remains whether the new decoder isn’t capable of decoding a 2160p H.264 8-bit signal or if it’s just a software limitation by the OS.

Albert Penello: There are several components required to support the 4K UHD video playback that result in a combination of changes in the new console. First, we added a 4K HEVC decoder to the SoC to render the compressed video streams efficiently in hardware. Next, we updated the video output to HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2

Netflix, Amazon, UHD Blu-ray etc. only use UHD in combination with H.265 (HEVC) so it makes sense for Penello to only talk about HEVC publicly.
As you probably have more accessibility to Microsoft than I do, it would be great if you could inquire from them whether the decoder does theoretically support UHD H.264 8-bit.

@Wiidesire We’ve pushed out a remote player profile update that forces transcoding down to 1080p for 4K h264 videos now. We will ping them about possible support for those videos.

any update?

The Xbox One still can’t play back 4K H264 content unfortunately.

Thanks for the support all ! Turns out I can direct my ire at MS for not supporting 4k H264, so I’ll be keeping my eyes out and perhaps get lucky in some future update.
