Is there a problem with 4k support for Xbox One S ?

I picked up my Xbox One S last night and excitedly try to play some new 4K movies (which were properly picked up by Plex as in 4k), however only the audio picks up and the screen is a flat green (unable render). Is this a codec issue or is there an update required for Plex to support the new Xbox One S 4k streaming ?

Would you mind providing your Plex Server logs?
There will likely need to be an update done for full 4k support, but it should still play the file (possibly just transcoding if necessary).

Yeah I actually had to turn off direct play in order for my items to play. To do this once your in the plex xbox app. press start - go to settings - Advance - change Direct Play from enabled to disabled. Hope that helps in the meantime

I experienced the same problem, green screen on 4k content playback. Hopefully the new Win 10 Universal app will come to Xbox One…

As stated above, if someone seeing this issue can provide logs so that it can be looked into that would be great.

Thanks folks ! @adamskoog I will grab those when I’m home from work; @iTerryFX I’ll give that a shot as well.

I’ll update on my findings ! One interesting note that I’ve found: the HDM1 port of my Samsung TV (UN55HU6840) labeled STB, when enabling UHD Color on the port, claims to support 4k at all resolutions, however none of the Apps (Netflix/Amazon) recognize 4k. After calling Samsung support, they recommended using the MHL port, which according the Xbox console settings does NOT support any alternate 4k resolutions, but the Apps (Netflix at least) DO recognize it and I’ve been able to stream 4k there. Plex/Mediaplayer both appear to have the same issue with this green screen however.

Ah the travails of being an early adopter

What model of Samsung do you have doofologist? I have the UE48JU6500, and I just today received my Xbox One S. I was worried at first because for some reason the console default to “DVI” mode, so I set it to HDMI. Then it kept telling me my TV did not support 4K. Then I read a note saying that the console will only detect all the 4K features properly (including the confusingly named UHD Color option, why they couldn’t just call it HDR I’m not sure) if the port type is set to auto-detect. Strangely enough that fixed it, and now all my TV features are detected by the console and Netflix runs at 4K just fine.

If you want to hit me up on twitter to discuss, feel free @Ry5ter

@Nights0ng Attached are recent logs for DLNA/Media; grep for Max (testing on a 4k MadMax file).

@iTerryFX I gave that a shot; rather than a green screen with stuttered audio, it just hangs indefinitely. Worth a shot though.

@Ryster I’ve got UN55HU6840; if you see the below screenshot, this is the compatibility from the Samsung recommended MHL HDMI port (HDMI3). While it looks like it wouldn’t work, this is the only port that Netflix recognized 4k (and currently works with). Using any other port with UHD Color enabled looks like your screenshot (except HDR, which my model doesn’t support), except that literally nothing recognizes 4k other than the dashboard.

Another piece of info: if I use the Samsung SmartTV app to play the 4k content directly from the Synology (not using the DLNA), it actually works fine. This has provided ample ammunition to my wife on why this purchase was unnecessary. This must be remedied

@Ryster out of curiosity, since you seem to be running smoothly, is Plex streaming 4k content for you ? What about other apps, like Youtube/Amazon ?

I’ve confirmed that Youtube doesn’t seem to support 4k yet; I can locate 4k content, but streaming it downscales it to 1080. Amazon’s player doesn’t appear to do it, though their app makes it hard to debug properly (and I don’t care so much as they don’t have much content to begin with).

Hi All,
I’ve had similar experience to doofologist. Green screen on a UHD file, but audio when streaming through plex. netflix shows up fine in 4k. Of course no other apps are supporting 4k on the xbox one s yet. I suspect plex just needs an update

Interesting experiences with 4K videos reported here. If the file is direct playing and you’re seeing a green screen then it’s most certainly an issue with the decoder on the Xbox One S itself. What are the details of the media you’re trying to play? Can you get an 4K media to direct play on the S?

Here was the details on the dolphins video i tried to play through plex. I’m wondering if it has something to do with the bitrate being so high. I had issues with another video that was 1080p that was around 38mbps bit rate. Previously i just chalked it up to the source being garbage. I’m going to run a few tests here in a little bit. I have three videos i can test.

I am getting 4k playback from the looks of it.
It still shows up as transcoding for both video and audio, but i think that is because the audio is DTS-HD 7.1. On the xbox app it shows the stream is ~40Mbps @4k.

1080p h265 file plays fine also but does also transcode to h264

If the higher bit rate is the cause that’s strange considering i play a lot of 1080p home movies that are 48mbps with no issues. I can’t see how being UHD should matter? 38mbps is actually quite low for a 4K tittle.

I am having an issue too. I have a 54GB h265 movie in uhd resolution. I am doing direct play on the Xbox One S and it starts up fine but the video slows down a lot. Is that normal? I’m pretty sure it’s not my network since a 96GB 4K file in h264 plays fine.

Anyone else had similar issues?

I just realized today that 4K files off an external HDD are doing the green screen thing, even though I used to play those files on the original Xbox One, streamed to my Samsung JS9000 just fine (the TV would do the upscaling). But now with the Xbox One S, whenever I try to do those 4K video files, it’s just green screen with audio, and then if I try to use the Edge app to watch YouTube.com videos in 4K, it does a green screen as well. What is going on? 4K HDR Blu-rays work just fine, as does Netflix 4K/HDR.

Just tried again today; still cursed with the green screen. Anybody else have any luck ? I’ve also been looking for some kind or release notes for Plex or an RSS feed for the releases. The server version is of course hard to miss, as it has a pop-up reminder when running the app on the web, but would be good to know when the next Xbox version lands

Hi there. Sorry for the issues you’re experiencing. Green screen is an indicator that the decoder on the Xbox One S is falling over, but I’m not sure why that would happen. I’m still in the process of acquiring an Xbox One S so I can look into it, hopefully soon!

@Moussa
I did some testing with some “4k” UHD material (got my Xbox One S today).
Both UHD H.265 (HEVC) 8-bit and 10-bit work perfectly with Direct Play (.MKV container + AC3 or DTS sound).

UHD H.264 8-bit material however gives the green screen others talked about.

@Moussa Do you possess a Xbox One S now?
