Is there a way to default new movie to Poster instead of the frame shot

When a movie is added it seems to create a poster by grabbing a frame from the video file and then it defaults the poster selection. Is there a way to have the poster default to the first downloaded poster file?

It would be nice for adding new files, but right now it would be nice because I am rebuilding my media server and I have a fresh install of Plex that I have add me movie media folder with a large number of files being added. Right now the only way to get a good poster is to manually edit each one.

Thanks

I am very aware of the correct naming and folder tree structure. The movies I am talking about are recognized and the metadata is downloaded and the posters are listed. Plex also creates a screen shot, puts it in the Poster section and default selects it.

The screen shot below is a current example I have right now with the first movie in my list. Plex has identified (matched) it and populated the metadata and downloaded available posters. The issue is that it always defaults to a frame shot and I have to manually select if I want a true Poster.

Thanks

May I see the content of the Plex XML info of that movie?

Issue #1:
This is a documentary. Documentaries usually don’t get metadata from the Plex Movie agent.
I recommend you to create a separate library of the type Movies.
Then set the default agent of this library to ‘The Movie Database’.

A second thing to verify: if your mp4 file has an embedded ‘screenshot’-type picture, Plex may use it as the default. You can change that by modifying the order of the metadata agents:
Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Then Refresh Metadata of the movie in question.

Trumpy answer is correct moving the local asset for appropriate topic to the top will have it default to the image/info from your local files first vs looking it up and downloading images/info.

I am a bit confused, I want the downloaded poster to be the default display when a new movie is added to my library and it scans it to get meta data and available posters. The process also seems to create grab a frame shot from the movie and sets that as the image displayed in my Movie grid. I do not have any local asset (image) when a new movie is added.

The screen shot I pasted above was a new movie added to the Movie library, scanned, recognized, metadata downloaded and it defaulted the poster to a frame of the movie.
