Whenever I port forward I know lots of hackers try to access the server. However xfinity advanced security blocks 99% of malicious hackers believe it or not as I get notifications suggesting this. This has been the only reason to use xfinity on my end. That said because lots of people might not have xfinity as an option or are tired of the data caps I was curious if there was such a way outside of xfinity advanced security to do this? Thanks so much.
Probably depends on your ISP and router. Generally we’re talking about a firewall + some level of DDoS protection, potentially combined with some level of IP blacklisting that might or might not work.
Not sure if you’re looking for specific products or just wanted to drop a product name yourself
You will find that 99% of the port scans you receive arent specific attacks but a blanked scan by bots that are continuiously running from various IP’s, so in general i wouldnt be too worried. Saying that i did actually have a hack attempt on my service a month ago but it wasnt a physical attack on the server but through the Plex login system, i of course freaked out when i started getting emails that my password had been changed and my login details. This is where two factor authentication comes into effect, i didnt have it on at the time but i damn well do now. So in short dont worry about all the port scans too much, change the default port from 32400 to something else and activate two factor login.
Xfinity advanced security is absolutely not necessary for a secure installation.
If you have port forwarding setup for specific services/protocols you are using and only those you are safe. If you have port forwarding setup for plex only then double check the config make sure it’s right and then don’t worry after that.
You might want to read up on xfinity advanced security. It is more about blocking your surfing habits it does not really do much for your home net security from any real outside threats
To be honest the best thing for that is a real firewall or obscurity.
