Is there a way to synchronize simultaneous playback on multiple clients on same LAN?

Back in the ancient times, on a Saturday, when a movie would come on TV that I liked, I could turn on all the TVs in the house and tune them to the same channel, and whatever room I was in, the movie would be playing.

It was great for doing chores like cleaning where I’d have to move from room to room. My ADHD brain loved having it on in the background.

Obviously since all those TVs were receiving the same TV signal, which was broadcast over radio waves traveling at the speed of light, the delay between each TV was milliseconds (nanoseconds? picoseconds?) and therefore imperceptible.

Is there a way to do this with Plex? I have tried starting a movie on one TV, and while it’s playing, resume on another TV, and mess with it a little until I could get it to synch up.

It takes some time, and isn’t perfect, and if I mess it up a little bit the echo effect drives me nuts. And if I were to repeat this for multiple TVs in multiple rooms, it would take so long that I would get bored with it.

It’s 2024. We’re basically living in the future. Is there a way to sync up these devices all on the same LAN?

I’ve looked into the watch together feature, but setting each Roku in my house up with its own account seems like overkill and kind of defeats the purpose of why I wanted a media sever that didn’t require logging in (back in the day anyway)

There is not.

You could create managed accounts using the Plex Home feature to use Watch Together. That way you don’t need a separate login/Plex account on each Roku.
