Hello, I have the opportunity to get a new desktop to run my server. The one Im using now is a very old workstation and it’s falling behind. I would be going from an i5 processor to an i7. But the graphics card in the new machine is the Nvidia Quadro 6000. Will this GPU suffice?
That’s a terrible GPU. I’ll “dispose” of it for you. Look for a PM with a PO Box…

Which Quadro 6000? There is the M6000, P6000, and RTX 6000.
The M6000 does not support HEVC video. It was introduced in 2015 and is showing its age.
The P6000 (2016) and RTX 6000 (2018) both support HEVC video. Either will make a very nice GPU for Plex. Either can be used for transcoding and tone mapping 4K HDR video on both Windows and Linux systems.
Additional details:
The Nvidia Encode / Decode Matrix shows video formats supported by their GPUs. You want one that will decode HEVC 10-bit 4:2:0.

What i7 are we talking about? You may not even need a GPU

You will need some kind of GPU if you want transcoding and tone mapping
It depends on how important it is to you. If you have a decent client and play thing inside your network you may not need to get something right away. It would buy you some time and you can hunt around for a good deal on something
If you’re sharing 4k HDR content with a lot of people remotely, that’s another story
I tend to watch most of my content inside my network but sometimes guests will access from outside. Sometimes 2-3 people dreaming at once. It gets laggy and loads alot.
Ok, I guess you’ll have to look at the Elplamsoft link FordGuy supplied and see what you think you’ll need
1050ti is the minimum and probably the cheapest option
