Server Version#: 1.31.2.6810
Player Version#: 4.100.1
I’m not sure exactly what has happened, but since the newer server updates, I’ve been having big issues with any video file I play that does not use SRT subtitles. Every time I try to play a video with non-SRT subtitles, I get a message saying that my server isn’t powerful enough to convert the video. What’s puzzling to me is that I never had an issue playing any of these files on any player beforehand, but since the newer updates the error started to pop up.
This first started happened while Plex was running on my NAS (which is a Terramaster F5-221) - as I mentioned before, I didn’t have an issue before, but there were other things going on (updated the NAS’ OS and such so I figured it might be an issue with that) so I switched back to running the server on my PC (I’m running a Ryzen 7 5800X with 32 gigs of ram) and the issue still was present. When playing videos on Plex Web OR my Tizen TV (I have a Samsung Q90) I get the error message every time I’m playing videos with non-SRT subtitles.
It took me some digging to figure out the problem was subtitles - I tried a bunch of other settings and nothing worked, but then I saw some posts on forums that mentioned it might be related to subtitle burn-in; I tried running the videos that were failing without subtitles and they all magically work with no video transcoding at all! What’s even strange is that this happens on non-image subtitle files, like ASS files. I ended up going into the Plex Web player settings and changed the setting for subtitle burn-in to be “Image Formats only” and all of a sudden everything works. When the setting is on Automatic, it seems to force burn-in regardless of if it’s an image format or not unless the subs are in SRT format.
What I am also finding puzzling is that I have some videos with PGS subtitles that had ZERO issues playing before on any player I threw them at, including Plex Web, that now fully refuse to play on anything but my mobile Plex client. I’m truly not understanding why this is - I assume it used to transcode and burn in, but with the newer Plex servers I keep getting the message. I’m guessing my setup is more than powerful enough to transcode 720p video on the fly, even with burn-in subtitles, so I don’t get what is happening at all.
This really only started recently with newer Plex server updates; I never had this issue beforehand on any player. What could have happened that all of a sudden this starts to pop up?
Thanks!
