Here’s the issue. I have the entire Doctor Who classic series (1963-1989 i think. 27 seasons). The very early seasons only have a handful of episodes where each episode is split usually into 4 or more parts. Take season 1 for example. It has 1 unofficial aired pilot and 8 official episodes
[The number between ( ) is the shows total episode count, going from 000 to 159)
Doctor Who - S01E00 (000) - Unaired Pilot
Doctor Who - S01E01 (001) - An Unearthly Child - Parts 1-4
Doctor Who - S01E02 (002) - The Daleks - Parts 1-7
Doctor Who - S01E03 (003) - The Edge of Destruction - Parts 1-2
Doctor Who - S01E04 (004) - Marco Polo - Parts 1-7
Doctor Who - S01E05 (005) - The Keys of Marinus - Parts 1-6
Doctor Who - S01E06 (006) - The Aztecs - Parts 1-4
Doctor Who - S01E07 (007) - The Sensorites - Parts 1-6
Doctor Who - S01E08 (008) - The Reign of Terror - Parts 1-6
Take just those 3 episodes for example. Plex should be showing only 3!!! episodes but in my case it’s showing only 9. (ep 00, ep01 pts 1-4 and ep 02 pts 01-4)
However instead of listing only 3 episodes, it shows each part of episode 1 & 2 as it’s own episode which is incorrect and pretty much every “episode” has that blue circled digit which i believe is for “versions” of the episode.
The current naming scheme is as followed
/Doctor Who
//Doctor Who 1963
///Season 1
////Doctor Who - S01E00 (000) - Unaired Pilot (showing in plex as it’s own episode)
////Doctor Who - S01E01 (001) - An Unearthly Child - Parts 1-4

----------Doctor Who - S01E01 (001) - An Unearthly Child (4) - The Firemaker (showing in plex as it’s own episode, not a part)
////Doctor Who - S01E02 (002) - The Daleks - Parts 1-7
----------Doctor Who - S01E02 (002) - The Daleks (1) - The Dead Planet (showing in plex as it’s own episode, not a part)

What do i need to fix so the episodes correctly appear in plex and not their sub-parts as their own episodes which is incorrect
Plex uses TheTVDB to fetch tv show metadata. That’s why it expects the shows to use the same episode organisation as on that site. TheTVDB usually adopts the order how the episodes were aired originally on tv, not as they are presented on DVD later.
If you take a look http://thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=76107&seasonid=9666&lid=7 you’ll see that it differs quite a lot from what you have.
Caution: the episodes with purple background are not part of that season. They are part of the Specials season (season code 00).
Yes i know where it gets the metadata. It’s incorrect because the tvdb lists each seperate part as it’s own episode and that’s NOT how it was done back in the day. Yes, each part was aired seperately but they were part of 1 episode. If you’ll look at my post above, you’ll see 4 parts for episode 1 each named differently but PART of the main episode “An Unearthly Child”. You could see it as
An Unearthly Child Part 1 - An unearthly child
An Unearthly Child Part 2 - The Cave of skulls
What they call as episode 1-2-3&4 are actually Ep 1 part 1, part 2, part 3 & Part 4.
so the question remains. What do i need to fix in the naming so they appear under the same episode, just parts & played consecutively

I won’t argue with you as this is really a matter of TheTVDB.

Can’t get it to work with, so must be something with the current naming. I know i’ll need to rename them some how. So again, in what way do i need eg episode 01 to rename for the stacking to work!
This is the opposite of your problem. You don’t have several files which contain one epsiode.
You have one file, which contains several episodes, unless I misunderstood you above.
The naming schema to indicate to Plex that one file contains several episodes is: Doctor Who - s01e05-e11 - The Daleks.mkv
The file names must be the same except for the “ptX” and needs to be at the end
Doctor Who - S01E01 (001) - An Unearthly Child pt1.mkv
Doctor Who - S01E01 (001) - An Unearthly Child pt2.mkv
Doctor Who - S01E01 (001) - An Unearthly Child pt3.mkv
Doctor Who - S01E01 (001) - An Unearthly Child pt4.mkv
there will not be any indication it is multiple files except when you view info

1 episode name “The Unearthly child”, in it’s own folder. 4 video files in it, each representing 1 part of the episode
Then I did misunderstand you.
Additionally to what BigWheel said above, all episode files of one season are expected to be in one common folder. There are no ‘subfolders per episode’ in Plex.
It won’t do what you want it to. I’ve been ripping mine for quite a while now and finally gave up and did it the way they want and it works fine.
When you say “episode” you actually mean “story”. Each episode is a discrete file with a different episode title and will and should stay that way.
Doctor Who S01E00 An Unearthly Child - Unaired Pilot
Doctor Who S01E01 An Unearthly Child
Doctor Who S01E02 The Cave of Skulls
Doctor Who S01E03 The Forest of Fear
Doctor Who S01E04 The Firemaker
Now, when I got up to the seasons that started naming each story the same; just with pt.1, pt.2, etc. . . I tried just combining them into one episode as I ripped them. This works, but is a lot of extra hassle in the long run.
Like this:
Doctor Who S11e1 The Time Warrior
Now you get each story as one episode; but it’s a lot of work ( I quickly stopped doing it) and the numbering gets weird pretty fast. Like The Time Warrior is actually episodes 1-4, it now shows it as episode 1 and then the next story still is listed as episode 5, to get the naming right. the third story would be listed as episode 11’ etc. . .
Like I said, it works but is hardly worth the trouble.
Now for my own sense of organization, I do put each story in it’s own folder within the season folder; but you don’t need it and it doesn’t affect the way Plex shows it.
I’m only on season 18, but found doing it the hard way just wasn’t worth it with such a big series.
Hope this helps.
Bummer, guess i have no option but to rename them if i want them to show correctly. Recoding and combining them isn’t an option. Even the best encoder i found quickly increases in size. I’ll rather keep them apart. I got some thinking to do. Thx

Sorry to revive this thread as it maybe answered elsewhere but here I go. I have acquired the classic (WHO) and had the same problem as most of you with the names of “stories”. The problem, which is not an actual problem is that when you look at let say season one Unearthly Child, there is a number in the video tile. That number means there are videos associated with in that video ( if that makes sense). There is an arrow that you must click to show the other stories in that list. It took me renaming the whole season twenty until I figured that out. Sorry for those of you that went through all that renaming trouble. Hope I helped someone.
Edit: After going back over this I realized that my info is incorrect, so please disregard or Admin/Mod, should delete
FileBot will fetch the episode name from TVDB and name them like:
A TV Show Library/
…Doctor Who/
…Season 01/
…Doctor Who - S01E01 - An Unearthly Child (1)
…Doctor Who - S01E02 - The Cave of Skulls (2)
…Doctor Who - S01E03 - The Forest of Fear (3)
…Doctor Who - S01E04 - The Firemaker (4)
This is in absolute compliance with Plex Naming and Structuring Standards - and - TVDB criteria for a perfect match. It does indicate the story arc, but it may not please Doctor Who Traditionalists.
Unfortunately it is a compromise, but it’s the way we have to work with Plex and TVDB. Like many others I stopped fighting Plex a long time ago and capitulated to it’s wishes. It’s just easier.
FileBot makes it too easy. Too bad FileBot won’t fill the gaps in my collection.
