I have two problems, one of which is new and one which is not. For reference, I have a QNAP TS-453A (8GB RAM), an HDHomerun Prime on Verizon FiOS and a way-faster-than-I-should-need internet connection.
New problem - Remote access all of a sudden doesn’t work. I’m unable to access my server, which was previously working just fine, from outside my home. All the settings are right, I do run a VPN but it allows port forwarding which is set up properly. Again, this was all working fine, say, a week ago. Nothing I’m aware of has changed within that time, so I have no idea why this is happening.
My only clue is on the “remote access” settings page, the WAN IP it displays is what it WOULD be if I weren’t behind a VPN. Typically, it shows the ACTUAL public IP the world sees as a result of my VPN.
Not New Problem - Live TV is rough, and that’s putting it lightly. There are two parts to this: buffering and “playback errors”. Right now, for example, ALL I want to do is watch the live coverage of the Boston Marathon and Plex simply REFUSES to tune the channel unless I refresh the window. I get the “unable to tune channel” error with either “no parts” or “timed out”. I refresh it, it tunes (maybe), and even dropping the bitrate down to 2MB/s it’s STILL choppy and buffering. Live tv seems to always have this insane buffering issue, even when I drop it to 2 or 4 MB/s. I feel like I shouldn’t have to do that? This server isn’t a wimpy POS - it’s listed in Plex’s compatibility list as being able to handle 1080p transcoding with a big ol’ check mark on the “hardware transcoding” side, where it’s listed as being able to handle 1080p with “some potential problems at higher bitrates” on the software transcoding side. So why am I having problems? I’ve attached my logs for reference. For clients I’m using plex web (chrome), android, a roku4, roku ultra, roku streaming stick+, and all of them ahve the same issues.
To resolve this, for the moment, I’ve had to use the HDHomerun app to watch the marathon. It, by the way, has no buffering and is clear as day, nice and HD, though I’m sure that’s because it can natively play MPEG-2.
