It appears EPG is the achilles heel of Plex DVR

In the Uk at least.

Day 3 of Plex DVR.

Impressed by HDHomeRun Quattro -setup and connecting to Plex 5 Star.

Streaming video to AppleTVs/iPads/iPhones - excellent 5 Star

Plex programme guide navigation difficult but the elves are working on that, hopefully Q2 18.

The single biggest issue is the GraceNotes EPG - it is unreliable.

Missing programmes on the UK’s most watched channel.
Wrong times of starting.
Mislabelling of episodes as repeats when they are actually first aired.
(all issues reported to Gracenotes through Plex EPG issues reporting process.

This makes Plex DVR unreliable and unusable except for TV you don’t really care about, in which case why record it?

I’ll see if I can work out how to use xmltv EPG and see if that is any better.

If necessary it may mean using the HDHomeRun DVR - I don’t mind paying $35 a year for an EPG as long as it is reliable.

I really liked being able to make Plex the centre of my Media universe - I have a very large collection of ripped DVDs CDs and audiobooks which are all being run great by Plex.

Off to work out how to use xmldv EPG now.

I think someone at Gracenote/Plex needs to properly go through the UK EPG data and get the basics sorted out, instead of expecting us to report errors (I have sent some in recently)

Channels names are wrong - not even sure how it went live with this
Mislabeling as you mention - i always use the New & Repeat option when scheduling

Good luck with the xmltv, i have tried in the past with this and not got anywhere

You know this is one of those times, of which I had one recently.

Where I was frustrated by something Apple did in iOS 11 that blocked really useful apps from working (basic networking features were blocked).

So I went off to look at alternatives, android, if I were to leave Apple I would get the Pixel/2.
In the course of testing, playing I found a whole pile of really frustrating things I took for granted in iOS and Android just leaves you hanging.

All this to say, the grass is rarely greener.

Having now looked closely at the HDHomeRun DVR I can say that Plex is doing a GREAT JOB! compared to everyone else.

Plenty of room for improvement, but at least Plex is using standard user interfaces that have been common for the last 40 years.

The HDHomeRun Quatro install was flawless - EXCELLENT.

The HDHomeRun DVR app requires working in Terminal and Vi to edit config files if you want record ANYWHERE other than the boot drive. I cannot imagine ANYONE who would use the boot drive as their one and only Video Storage!

So PLEX is KING here.

So, I’ll keep the old - Steam powered DVR and use it for recording anything REALLY important and use Plex with the dodgy EPG for everything else.

If Plex could add a feature where I could pay for a reliable/accurate EPG I would be more than willing…

yes. the epg is a pain and gracenote is good if it works and bad if not. a fallback to the epg that ist broadcast with the channels would be really useful. i have no idea why plex is so vehemently against this. at least in germany it is quite good and i never had a problem with it. i see no real benefit in gracenote.

Actually that would be very useful, Freeview EPG is extremely reliable,

Does the German ota EPG have full Season/Episode information?

With the UK one this is missing (or included as part of the description)

Would be nice as a backup, but shows would not get identified correctly if using the ota EPG

PaulSalter - Good Point!
