iTunes Playlists Not Importing

try to examine the itunes xml

paste the xml for a track or 2 so we can see the path the xml is exporting.

we need to determine;
a) what itunes is exporting for the paths to your music files
b) if that path is the same that plex is expecting

the path will look weird, due to the way that the itunes xml is designed, so don’t freak out and assume it is wrong (or right).

I’m not sure if I know how to do this, but what I did was open one of the xml files of a playlist and then copies a string for the song “Babylon Sisters” by Steely Dan, and it is as follows:

file://localhost/B:/Music/Steely%20Dan/Alive%20In%20America%20(Live)/01%20Babylon%20Sisters%20(Live).m4a

My B drive is the NAS that holds all media files.

Ok I’m confused by what you mean xml files?

there should only be 1 itunes xml file, do you mean the playlist section within the itunes xml? if so ok

A and B drives are normally reserved for floppy drives in windows, some applications do not work properly with those drive letters.

perhaps plex is ignoring that b drive because it is (normally) invalid.

I would suggest you change the drive letter of the nas to something other than A, B or C.

I have exported xml files from itunes on my PC to my music file on my NAS for each playlist and for my entire itunes library. I’ll try changing my drive letter and see if that helps.

i don’t think that is how it works.

plex uses the whole itunes xml file, this file is usually in the root of wherever the main itunes library database is.

the path for this main itunes xml should be the same for both itunes and plex @

https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!

settings > plugins > itunes library xml path

in my case (on my nas) the plex itunes xml path is

/data/media/audio/iTunes Music Library.xml

Ok. I may understand. I have renamed the drive for my NAS as “Z”. The itunes library xml file is on my C drive and is C:\Users\Brad\Music\iTunes . The path to my music files on my NAS is Z:\Music. Which one of these do I put in the itunes plugin on Plex?

should be
C:\Users\Brad\Music\iTunes

you should confirm that the itunes music library.xml file is in fact there, and that it has the updated Z drive letter for file paths inside the xml.

Ok. Will do. However, please confirm that the path I am supposed to put in the box under Settings>Plugins is the path to the xml file on my C drive not my Z drive(NAS), even though my Z drive has all the media files on it. Correct?

yes, put the c: drive in the plex settings.

you may have to restart plex for it to take affect.

also you can force a manual itunes playlist import by clicking the 3 dots … next to playlists in the plex web

I have confirmed that the xml file on my c drive is now showing the z drive in the path. Thanks! I’ll circle back as soon as it finishes scanning.

Unfortunately, the scan has finished and it has not imported my playlists and there are not three dots next to Playlists. I now have two files in my playlists both of which are named “Recently Added” but they don’t play if clicked. I also tried making a brand new music library so that I could click the “import from iTunes” in “Advanced”, but it didn’t import my playlists either. Thoughts?

Ok. So I never could get the playlists to work with my music on my Synology NAS, no matter what I did. I suspect it is the difference in file naming between my PC and my NAS, which runs Linux. So, I moved my music back to my PC on my F drive(where it was originally, pre-NAS), thinking this would fix it. It didn’t. I can’t seem to get my playlists to show up, even though they did when my music was on my PC before getting the NAS. I tried both to revise the plug in path for my iTunes xml file to the original location on my C drive and also to copy it and put it in the same folder as my music files on my F drive. Nothing has worked. Can anyone assist?
