What response are you looking for with this post?
Not much, I think Plex has legal problems and has decided to change things. Iāve kind of moved on to my android TV box.
Pity though, I really liked the old setup.
What kind of legal problems?
Nick misses the illegal channel plugins⦠says the Chrystal Ballā¦
you mean the 30 pound crystal ball i dropped on you foot for using it incorrectly, picked it back up and dropped on your other foot? iām with a lot of peeps that we shouldnāt of been screwed on the plugins, legal or otherwise. i personally donāt add plugins to plex but if i did what i add is none of their business.
Agh - got it.
Plex warned about removing plugins over a year ago - Iām still using mine (trakt and export tools).
I think thatās a fair enough warning to move to Emby or Kodi if you want to keep using plugins.
When you own a business, and this single feature prevents you from going in the direction you want to go in order to complete your vision of your product, you may say otherwise. The simple fact is, plug-ins gave Plex a certain air of illegitimacy, because a lot of them were plug-ins that were directly related to the theft of intellectual property. I donāt think Plex would have gotten the Tidal integration, nor be making a deal with Warner Brothers, if the Plug-ins were still around. Thatās two strategic partnerships that are probably going to take Plex very far in this industry⦠If you can name me any other product that has a plug-in that allows the theft of intellectual property while simultaneously being partnered with a major owner of intellectual property, then Iām wrong⦠But I havenāt found anything that meets those two criteria
more than a few here that canāt seem to read or comprehend IT IS NOT ANY BUSINESS OF PLEXāS WHAT PLUGINS ONE USES.
topic muted.
Umm, I read, and comprehended exactly what you were saying⦠I disagree with your statement, and expressed my disagreement with a well reasoned argument. You may choose to disagree with that, and you can even presume that I lack reading comprehension skills, doesnāt mean I canāt voice my opinion, or counter your argumentā¦
Of course it is.
Plex is potentially liable for enabling the use of illegal downloading/streaming etc.
Thatās an interesting point. Legally is Plex vulnerable for what others use the platform for? Is it anymore responsible for what others do with their software or platform then Google or Facebook?
Since thereās probably no precedent either way, it would be up to a court ruling⦠However, legal issue or not, it WOULD prevent strategic partnerships like Tidal and Warner Brothers, which is the path this private company has chosen to take, and itās well within their rights to prevent the unauthorized access of intellectual property by whatever means they choose in order to acquire those strategic partnerships⦠Itās like saying facebook has no right to censor what others say⦠and While I disagree with facebook censoring things, I do stand for their right to do that with their own platform and propertyā¦
I believe so, yes. ā¦but itās about what you can prove.
Itās probably easier to prove Plexās complicity in providing a platform that can stream illegal content than to prove Facebookās complicity in allowing data manipulation to skew an election.
Jason, I pretty much agree with your post, but if theyāre trying to move into streaming or similar areas, theyāre to late. The big guys are blowing them away, before they begin.
In fact, I thought about buying Netflix stock, but have decided it going to have major competition, not to mention itās lineup is starting the totally suck.
Sure, but thatās a different model. Netflix needs to buy licensing to stream their content, and Studios have decided that itās cheaper and more profitable for them if they just host their own streaming platform. This has forced Netflix to change strategy and also become a content creator rather than a content server.
What Plex is doing is mostly unique for the first half of their plan, and closer to Hulu for the second half. Itās allowing the user an easy means to organize and host their own content. Thatās the first half, and because of this, it has garnered a large user base allowing for the second half, which is brokering deals with content providers to gain in ad revenue from an otherwise untapped market. So itās win win, because the content provider is still able to stream their content to who they wish through their chosen means, and they are now also able to target an additional audience who isnāt currently in their purview due to not wanting to pay a subscription. So they can still generate income from advertisementsā¦
The bottom line is that it is ILLEGAL to āappropriateā TV Show feeds from someone else and create a plugin for the masses to enjoy - without license or permission.
Knowing this, as they do, and since theyāll soon be in bed with any number of Legal Providers/Suppliers with all the licenses and permission required ('cause they own the stuff) - the stench of that ILLEGAL liaison must be showered off before any future, more legal relations ensue.
SeeYa Plugins (we will deny we ever had anything to do with 'em - and they may not have other than allowing it to happen).
did I see that right? did it censor the word pie rat? lolā¦
Suddenly becomes even more true⦠lol
Well⦠they always said they were:
āTotally Unsupportedā.
Enter Warner Bros - Exit Unsupported and ILLEGAL plugins.
No, I used the word: s-na-tch - as in whisk away quickly - not the other oneā¦lol
