I changed my password when I saw the email telling me to do so. I’ve made sure my server is the latest version. I signed up for an annual subscription to Plex Pass and now I’m able to see my server and libraries on my TV and remotely on my mobile device (iPhone). Now, NONE of my friends or family who’ve previously been able to watch the libraries I’ve shared and invited them to enjoy can even get to my server. My reading of the new terms leads me to believe they should, at minimum, be able to watch remotely on their TV’s but even that doesn’t work. I’ve been unable to find this after many searches in the forum(s) so am posting here. What am I missing? Do ALL users have to buy a remote watch pass even though I’ve already purchased an annual Plex Pass?
No, you having a Plex Pass is enough for any invited user to view your content remotely. This is likely a different issue.
One issue I think I heard is that after a password change, permissions to the servers for your users were removed or deleted. I believe I heard they are still invited to your server, but the individual libraries (or all libraries) that you shared to them are no longer listed. Check the Manage Library Access panel, and see if your invited friends have access to any libraries.
After that if it wasn’t the case, have them log out then back into their account on the clients to see if that resets their permission issues.
If that doesn’t do it, what exactly is the message they are getting?
Have you tried a server restart? Seems to fix a lot of sharing/access issues, before having to do anything else.
I did a server restart immediately after confirming that the server was up to date - actually, it was a full system restart of the host laptop and then re-launch of server software.
Also, checking the Library Access shows all users still permitted to see the appropriate respective libraries. I had even tried revoking access to any libraries and then re-granting access to one user on the off chance that might have been it.
I’m waiting now for one of my users to do the log-out and log-in test to see if that helps.
Thank you for all suggestions so far … Plex is too good to want to have to give up on it
I know you said you’re on the latest, but can you share the version number you are running?
I am looking at your account on Plex.tv
-
You have 2 server instances
– “IxxxxxTxxxxx” , created over 4 years ago but not seen in almost 4 years on Windows
– Another, identical named, “IxxxxxTxxxxx”, also created over 4 years ago but last seen about 3 hours ago (as I post here now) on Linux (Mint) -
Your Account has used up all the certificates Plex.tv normally allows at one time (about 5 months worth) over a 2 day period.
When I see this, it is often the result of moving PMS from one machine to another and forgetting file system permissions & ownership settings.
If this is the case, it’s easily remedied.
So I ask, Is the PMS server now running on Mint the old Windows server or something new ?
I had initially set it up on a Windows laptop but Windows itself became a problem (constant forced updates and an older machine that Windows wouldn’t play well with) so I ported it to the Mint installation. I also copied all the files from the initial external drive to a larger one and gave the bigger drive the same name thinking I could just swap one out for the other but Plex noticed it was a different physical drive and I wasn’t able to simply rename it once Plex and Linux and I suspect Dobby from Harry Potter all knew what I’d done, I wasn’t fluent enough in Linux to clean it up properly. So I just unplugged the original drive, somehow got it to be happy with the larger one and that’s how we got to now.
You mention all these ‘certificates’ used in a 2 day period – when, specifically was the 2 day period? At some point, I’ve been getting alerts to update Linux and I’m pretty confident that will turn into another train wreck as it tramples over any and everything I already understand too little of.
And, I’m happy to report that the user I had asked to test logging out and back in reports that all is well on that end so my initial issue has at least in part, been sorted. There are other users who will all have to log out and back in on their respective TV’s and such but one success is good news.
If I’m looking in the right place, under Plex Web - General it says Version 4.147.1
That’s the web version, the server version is down a little bit in the second General section. Some folks think they have the latest because it doesn’t allow an update directly, so just confirming.
Also – how, exactly, does an account “use up” one of those certificates you mention?
I’m not being flip, I’m just old enough to not be embarrassed by my own ignorance anymore
Ok … how does Version 1.42.2.10156 sound?
Yup, you’re good. Saw your other response, so looks like you got it sorted.
PMS “uses up” a certificate by:
- Starting up,
- Attempting to load its stored certificate
- If the stored certificate is invalid, non existent, or permission denied,
- Then PMS requests a new one from Plex.tv (requests)
- PMS now USES that certificate
- PMS --silently-- tries to store the certificate so it can be reused at next restart.
– There is a single line error in the logs , often quickly lost, when “permission denied” occurs when writing this new certificate for future use.
When next restarted, The cycle repeats.
The next request to Plex.tv for another new certificate increases the Use count.
– Old ones automatically expire and are removed
This is what I think I’m seeing now.
As for being “old enough” … move over… I need to sit down too … LOL
Got it … and because I hadn’t yet figured out that I needed to get in line with the new Plex Pass and free account particulars, I was just shotgunning my own and my users’ attempts to get connected. The message “YourServer” is unavailable tells my users my server is offline. If I know it’s NOT offline, I’ll do my own connection confirmation dance before asking them to try again, ad nauseum. If the message said, “you cannot access YourServer because you or the server owner has unfinished business of some sort” we’d all be doing a different dance,
That dance is now bearing fruit.
Thanks again ….
Sincerely,
Another relic … ;o)
Let me know if you need a certificate reset. (That will show up in your logs)
I’ll reset it after we ensure PMS can write to its own local files.
I’ve found reference(s) to the logs under Troubleshooting but no clear indication how I might look into the void to see whatever I should look at. Or should I not try to look but download and then attach here? Is such an attachment possible here?
