Just bought lifetime Plex Pass and now playback is pausing frequently

Compatibility spreadsheet shows 480p/720p/1080p Yes Yes Some for software and Yes Yes Yes for hardware:

Wanted to see increased speed for clients when transcoding and PlexPass went on sale so pulled the trigger. And then I started getting texts and emails from family members that their shows are now pausing frequently. What gives? It was faster without the PlexPass?? I restarted and waited overnight and they are still complaining…now I’m sad I spent a hundred bucks I probably shouldn’t have…

Have you already checked the now-playing tile on your server dashboard for those streams? This should show if and how any of that media is being transcoded (e.g. with or without hw acceleration).

Have you configured the server to use hw-accelerated transcoding (if applicable)?
See Settings > [Server Name] > Transcoder > Use hardware acceleration when available and Use hardware-accelerated video encoding

Keep in mind that Plex Pass members have a bunch of additional settings/options which might impact remote streams (e.g. bandwidth limits for remote streams which might cause streams to be transcoded that might otherwise have been streamed directly → see Settings > [Server Name] > Remote Access > Limit remote stream bitrate)

Yes, both Plex and Tautulli show that the clients are using (HW) transcoding. Oddly, I notice that the video is a 1080p file that Plex is transcoding down to 720p for some reason.

And yes, I have those hardware checkboxes selected. It is using HW transcoding, the problem is that (HW) appears slower than software.

On the Internet Upload Speed item it would be helpful to know what percentage internally Plex will use of that value.

Here is what Plex shows:

and here is what Tautulli shows:
