Let me add my voice to the choir. I have a Sony tv with AndroidTV and while we use the built-in apps for Netflix, Amazon, etc., I have a NUC running Plex Media Player hooked up to it for playing all our “local” media. Why? Because it “just works” – it supports all audio formats and subtitle formats and doesn’t need to transcode anything. Now I need to audit all my media and start researching what hardware supports what.
What’s really startling is this weird hypocrisy around “we’re moving to a unified UI” but not supporting that UI on desktop platforms? You already have all the logic written for the other streaming boxes – just shove the same UI into the desktop app (heck, the webUI too, while you’re at it).
I’ve created a new topic as most of the others are ancient.
I’d also add that while the Shield dramas affect our bedroom TV, we have our Linux box that runs our Plex server hooked up directly to our living room TV and have been using builds of PMP in TV mode for playback there. While I understand those builds are unofficial, if you are going to completely discontinue that app, please consider maintaining an official Linux build of the new one. The loss of TV mode is annoying, but we have a wireless KB/touchpad hooked up that box so it’s not the end of the world, but the web player sucks and has problems with some formats, and it would be nice to have a native Plex player there even if its not up to the standard that the PMP set. Cheers.
On the whole, maybe, but it’s the primary thing missing to make the new app useable as a 10 ft. experience. As it stands, I can’t even run the new and old apps side by side in my setup to see what else is broken/missing/changed, as I use a remote to navigate PMP.
Also, New Plex App - Formats Supported - #6 by deactivated seems to indicate that the new app should be able to play everything that PMP does, so if only you could navigate via keybaord/remote, there shouldn’t be much of an uproar.
the lack of refresh rate switching and the buffer setting are the killers to me (as much as i love navigating with the wireless keyboards arrow keys… far and away the fastest / easiest way to navigate any plex app)
already tried some high bitrate 4k hdr files that play with no stopping/sign of buffering on PMP that balk/stutter to start on the new player without the 500mb buffer (as small as that actually is for such a file) : (
Subtitles? Yea, we have subtitles in the replacement for PMP… maybe a little big, but subtitles we got. Not to worry tho - they work exactly the same in the new PMP so whatever you guys are doing - keep it up. The Incredible Hulk Subtitles are working fine.
These are UTF-8 srt subs, fresh out of Subtitle Edit, muxed into an MKV. Apparently ASS subs aren’t the only subs that mess up as these UTF-8 subs sure look like @$$ (but are really easy to read - unlike the new Plex for Windows, generally speaking).
Other than the fact you have a ton of people mourning the loss of a 10 foot UI for their desktops in this thread? I must admit the decision to drop this UI is completely baffling for me. Has the company forgotten where it came from?
Dedicated audio controls.
Audio downmixing (something I’m sure the shield tv doesn’t currently have due to licensing).
Remote support.
Subtitle delay adjustment.
Audio delay adjustment.
The info screen from old PMP where you could see the cache fill etc.
Cache size settings.
Refresh rate switching…
By the look of that they’re hardly gonna miss it… Just sayin’
To be fair though they only marginally take up more screen space than the player controls on an Nvidia Shield.
I don’t want to alarm you but a while ago I questioned the size of the aforementioned controls and was officially told that if they were smaller people may not be able to see them.
So following that reasoning those subs may be a killer feature rather than a bug.
Have Plex creators lost their minds? Why on earth would they do this? They will lose a huge percentage of their users. I mainly use PMP to watch on my TV with 5.1 sound. If Plex will only play stereo sound, it makes it useless. Just when I am getting a good library together, you will stop supporting “HTPC” That makes no sense. What the hell are you thinking? This is the core feature of Plex.
I never cared for the “TV Mode” UI but all the settings are there, sound settings, optical passthrough, subtitle delay settings etc. Those have to be enabled in the new app.
For more absurdity, check Plex for Windows’ movie preplay screen. A ‘bug’ or ‘oversight’ (perhaps a design change) removes the ‘Forced Feature Overload’ condition that exists between the Play button and the first Actor Image.
In the Uno Apps a Forced Feature Minefield exists of (slightly variable):

The Plex Forced Feature Thug fully implemented:
It’s unclear, at this time what exactly is going on, but it’s really funny (hilarious, in fact) that the improved actor images location is only available on the app you can’t use.
