Killing PMP

Sadly I can’t. The install lasted 20 minutes. I want those minutes back! :rage:

I do have to say here that I see no issues in UNO on my ATV 4K.

Anyway its been a long night shift. Lets see what latest “cool” blog post I wake up to.

So then rather wasting time with this awful ‘desktop app’ - why not do the smarter thing and make the Xbox One app and the Windows 10 app UWP so that they can stop being separate? Where devs are gradually moving towards high-DPI aware apps in the app store so that a separate update engine isn’t required, your team are the ones taking it out of that in favour of a poorly made EXE unfit for purpose?

Completely agree. Not having a Plex app in the Windows Store smells like you are giving up on Windows… Just make a real UWP app of the Xbox One App and I would personally be happy.

While Android on the Nvidia SHIELD doesn’t support all of those, it certainly supports refresh rate switching, subtitle offset, and has done for quite a long time. Audio delay can be set on the Shield itself. I’m not sure what you mean about dedicated audio controls though.

refresh rate switching on the shield is often broken/hit and miss…
you’ll find 100s of threads floating around about it not working half the time…

Have you got some logs you can share about that? We use the same logic for picking a refresh rate as PMP.

@DaveBinM I have a dedicated Windows 8 server tucked away in an attic room running Plex Server. Then I have 6 TV’s in the house, all with Windows 10 HTPC’s attached to them running Plex Media Player. Replacing all of those with Nvidia Shields will be very expensive, and pretty much pointless.

On most machines I need refresh rate switching, on some I need HD audio passthrough, and on one I need support for a second screen.

I also need the option to pop out of plex and run iplayer / netflix / sky go / youtube on occassions.

I can overcome most of this with Plex for Kodi.

Can you at least assure us that the official Plex for Kodi plug in will continue to be supported moving forward?

Pointless in what way? The Shield supports refresh rate switching, audio pass through. There are definitely YouTube and Netflix apps on the Shield, and there may well be iPlayer and Sky Go apps in Google Play too you can install on the SHIELD, but I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Plex, I think your metrics are wrong.

I simply do not believe that more people use the Nvidia Shield than a PC or Laptop.

Wrong, so wrong!

Oh, and let’s not forget Plex deleting my Thread, with no explanation as to why, no warning, NOTHING.

Just plain censorship.

Sooooo Apple!

Dave, you are suggesting that user goes out and buys 6 Shields. Are you for real?

I’m not suggesting that at all. They can choose to use whatever they like, but if they do use a SHIELD, what would make it pointless?

Maybe this Dave…

I’ve asked for additional information on that.

I mean pointless, as in a pointless waste of resources and tech. I have 6 lovely Windows 10 HTPC’s, all with remotes and wireless keyboards, that all work well for me. It seems pointless as in wasteful to replace them all with Shields.

As well as hearing about the Shield being flaky / unreliable there is one thing it can’t do that my HTPC can which is run a second screen, upon which I run Frontview+ which is very cool.

So, are there plans to officially support Plex for Kodi moving forward to keep us loyal HTPC users and subscribers from imploding?!

Teething issues which will be resolved. That’s why they’re supporting PMP until 2020…

That is true…most people use their Htpc as the server as well as player, so the need for a android tv box, apple tv, Chromecast etc was not required. So if cutting off Htpc support means another device to be used. Now if you mention in blogs and articles about Al Gore and it is good for the environment as the other devices use less power etc, then that is not true. You actually adding another device as well still using the Htpc as it is the server! So not quite sure what Plex are trying to achieve.

If the 150£ nvidia shield cant handle 4k files with 7.1 truehd audio what chance has a 60£ mibox got lol! check your facts dude, streaming devices fail left and right when it comes to media combinations.

Best reply on this thread. Thanks for demonstrating some actual understanding and writing with balance.

Will start looking into Emby in this case. Very sad, I had just got into the feel of Plex. Well, at least it works on my phone and tablet, but I would still like to continue using it on my HTPC.

Let’s be clear:

They’re not “cutting off HTPC support”.

They’re stopping development/support of PMP from end of Jan 2020 and instead, supporting a new app called Plex, which will run on your HTPC. This gives them time to make changes to the new app, before PMP is no longer supported (but will still run!).

The real concern is about the specific features that are currently missing from the new Plex app vs the existing Plex Media Player.

Not @ you, but…

The constructive way to deal with this is raise clear, concise and thoughtout threads dedicated to those missing features. It isn’t to TYPE IN CAPITALS like some are doing here, or demonstrate the emotional intelligence of a teenager. In the real world, that usually doesn’t help…

It may help if Plex can offer a roadmap for the new Plex app, if they’re indeed intending to address some of the missing features.

I don’t use PMP on a HTPC (I used to use Kodi on a NUC but I’m one of the people who switched to a TV client that Direct Plays everything I require, for simplicity/time savings), so I can’t comment on the features that are missing but one of them at least seems to be the UNO interface isn’t as big as the TV layout of PMP.
