Kinda creepy Plex is telling me they are keeping track of how often I watch

@progravix I agree with you (see i do agree) can come over creepy. Also i understand you read it and that you understand it but WE all do allow them to do this (thats the point i was trying to make clear). and thats the marketing clause for later (ie… send you a marketing email about an upcoming scifi movie if you like scifi (just an example), while creepy we do allow it.)

Anyways I didn’t want to start this whole back and forth discussion simple wanted to state we agreed to it end of story (whatever a person ever might have claimed in the forums its void, only that TOS counts and it allows allot).

Loved your Kohler example but scary enough it already happens more then you think such creepy emails from other parties.

However (constructive part of story) I am willing to pay a SUPERPREMIUM for a no tracking for marketing option (maybe plex might find that interesting.)

@linuxdave totally agree with you.

I received it also and I agree that it is odd and really not necessary. I’m sure that it is innocent enough but I don’t feel that I need Plex to let me know that they are watching my usage. Hopefully they won’t be sending anymore of these.

Hmm I guessing its a “Reminder to keep using Plex.”
If they were keeping track, they are not doing a very good job.
Watched shows this morning, like I always do. and have been doing for the last 5 years.
So it might be a mistake on there part, or there tracker is doing a P#ss poor job at tracking.

Yes, got this too
A - Inaccurate
B - Creepy, don’t become Facebook Plex, you’re a service, not my friend
C - I really don’t want you or anyone else knowing what I watch

Here is what I think happened…

From this thread (and the other in non-Plex Pass General Discussion), everybody that received this email used or attempted to use Plex Cloud. When it was by invitation only, I tried it out, then Amazon was dropped as a provider. I no longer had any use for it. I removed Plex Cloud and did not use again. This is why I “haven’t been playing a lot of media lately.” Obviously they should have checked that I don’t have Plex Cloud setup.

Maybe that’s not it, just a guess. Everybody that said they received the email also have Plex Pass (obviously in this thread, but in the other thread as well).

@brunomc,

I agree that I agreed to it (the ToS). I guess my opinion is that it was just a poor execution.

Hey everyone. No doubt the email you all received earlier today raised some hairs as well as eyebrows. We’re deeply sorry about that and we’ll be sending out an email shortly, but here’s the main text:

Earlier today we sent an email to a small percentage of Plex users who (we thought) hadn’t used Plex in a while, urging them to give it another shot. Seemed harmless enough, except it turns out we messed it up and ended up including a completely random mix of users (among them, some of our most active and beloved users).

To make matters worse, the wording in the email seemed to imply that it was being sent based on what folks are watching in Plex, which was most definitely not the case. We do not know or track what is in anyone’s library, and we do not know or track what people are playing. In order to make Plex work, we do keep track of things like user login times and when Plex devices were last seen. And we do occasionally use this data to send targeted emails (e.g. to let specific people know about issues impacting certain devices or operating systems).

If you were accidentally targeted (and took offense to us calling your beautiful media collection “dusty”) we sincerely apologize for the screw up. If you actually haven’t used Plex in a while, we still urge you to give it another shot! We promise we’ll be more careful with the knobs and levers on the email machine!

Got the invite for Plex cloud, but never used it.
So how would they assume that I would use Plex Cloud.
Again Bad tracking…

@kinoCharlino,

Thank you for the response. Now, if we could get that language added to the ToS, some in here would feel a bit more comfortable.

Language: "the wording in the email seemed to imply that it was being sent based on what folks are watching in Plex, which was most definitely not the case. We do not know or track what is in anyone’s library, and we do not know or track what people are playing."

@brunomc,

Even though we have a Plex Employee here indicating that Plex "[does] not know or track what is in anyone’s library, and we do not know or track what people are playing," it doesn’t supersede the ToS. Still, I trust Plex.

I received the email as well. My question is, what constitutes “a lot” of media? My server runs 24/7/365 and in the last 7 days I’ve had 63 items played (excluding music which I don’t track in PlexPy), 22 of which were played by me. This has to be some kind of mistake on Plex’s part.

It is and I replied with an explanation and what will be going out via email soon. See my earlier reply.

Oh my mistake – I glanced and missed your response. Glad Plex doesn’t actually think my PMS is slacking. She’s a hard working media streaming monster!

Judging by all the information the NSA is providing us, I believe it when you say your PMS is a streaming master!! :wink: ok I kid, I kid!

Well, I know you’re not getting it from my microwave… :wink:

Ya, I thought that email was a little odd, as we have an extensive library (1200+ movies, 10,000+ tv shows). I figured my firewall was working as it should.

Thank you for the followup email explaining what occurred.

Now, on to finding a few more terabytes, as I’m running out of space! :wink: 20Tb and counting!

Happy Plex-ing!

So, I’m not jumping to conclusions, but then what was the objective of the email if Plex doesn’t know or track their user’s usage? The email stated that Plex “noticed” that I hadn’t played my media lately. If you don’t track usage, why would someone draft an email that stated the opposite?

Did it write itself and mistakenly decide it had that user tracking data?

Best regards.

All I can say is… Data is nice, Data is powerful and Data is worth a lot of money to the right entity.

I fear this is only the beginning. Not sure what will happen if and when Plex gets bought out or becomes a publicly traded company. But I bet a lot of “entities” would be very interested in acquiring playback data… like file names and such. :wink:

Only a matter of time I’m afraid…

Thanks @plex for the follow-up email. It did kinda creep me out. I use plex every day. I love the service. My digital content never has a chance to get dusty.

I’m kinda curious myself what the original email was supposed to be to begin with, if it were worded correctly and content pertaining…
