Can anyone explain the actual architecture that PLEX uses for it’s Live TV and DVR. From what I understand, PLEX itself is an offshoot of KODI, but when I go to the Live TV option in KODI, the channel pops up immediately without lag. Yet, when I do the same in PLEX, there is substantial buffering followed by a few seconds of play followed by more buffering then the channel finally ‘locks’. It seems as if PLEX has put several layers of unnecessity between the tuner and the application. I would truly like to understand the underlying operation here so that I might find a workaround. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Plex is nothing like Kodi. One of Plex’s really old client Plex Home Theater was a fork of Kodi, but that ended a long time ago. Plex has nothing related to Kodi now.
Plex streams from the tuner to the server then proxies that stream out to the client. This allows for multiple clients to share one tuner and Plex to post process the file for commercial detection.
Time how long it takes for the HDHR client to tune a channel vs Plex, the overhead is usually only 1-3 seconds. This will be dependent on what you are using as a server as any i3 or above will handle this well.
I can’t think of any great work around other than to watch live with the HDHR client and DVR with Plex which would use 2 tuners.
Too bad there’s not an option to prevent it from hitting the server first. No doubt that is where the lag comes in. It also affects DVR recordings. I get multiple failed recordings with PLEX and 0 with tvheadend… I appreciate the info, Peace.
