I couldn’t say for sure to be honest, If you look here: http://pkg.freebsd.org/ you’ll see the pkg repo is no longer updated, and that’s been for quite a while. It seems the last they have there is 1.13.8.
I can only guess since its been long ago but I think any before 1.15 should work, but in any case its always best to use what the system provides!
That said the fact that that is the last version that “runs” doesn’t mean pms will fully work! A lot of things change with time! APIs evolve and get deprecated too, so you’ll most likely lose the ability to fecth metadata etc!
Also recent version support Music Libraries with all the goodies, past version are still using the split “regular”/“premium” type and that was never supported on FreeBSD!
Another thing is Hardware transcoding which also only works on recent versions of plex AND freebsd (12.x is even recommend for that)
In any case tl;dr is there is no latest supported PMS on 10.3 because or minimum requirement is currently 11.2!
Thanks, until i am not missing any function I am happy not to be in need to update
so for now everything works like a charm… nearly
just iOS devices have this issue at my configuration but i doubt changing to linux and better hardware and upgrading will solve it at all, it might be iOS issue with WiFi
hum it could potentially be a bug in older pms versions too.
I’m curious though is it that FreeNAS doesn’t support you’re hardware or FreeBSD? If its FreeNAS and you’re that familiar with jails maybe you could move over to FreeBSD? The Music Library support is way better for sure! And like I said not even sure for how long you’ll be able to mantain this; I could swear with a version that old metadata fetching wouldn’t even work; Ofc that would be for tvdb.
I dont understand why you try to explain me that my version does not work, if you read my post you see that I have no issues with metadata or other things, I also posted the only issue that I have… and its iOS dependent because I use plex on WebApp and Android and ChromeCast too… no issues there.
And also please do not try to convince me that my hardware is capable of other OSes, I am not willing to learn a new technology with this hardware, it has a limitation that is 1) CPU is old AMD and 2) maximum 8 GB RAM… but yes you want to recommend me another OS, then please recommend me one with these requirements that can import a FreeNAS ZFS volume… and it should support AD Domain, it should support NFS/CIFS Shares, it should be open source/Free, I guess there are tons of solutions like that in the internet Please close this thread
Btw to be super clear I’m not trying to convince you of anything!
I was for sure trying to help! FreeNAS is mostly a UI on top of FreeBSD, so out of curiosity, mostly, I asked If that might be an option!
Running older versions does often lead to issues for obvious reasons, bugs will be fixed, APIs change and get deprecated etc but more important even are the security issues that are fixed in more recent versions too. So I feel like I am obliged to try to help or at least suggest paths to the best of both worlds!
That said! This is your call! Please do use whatever you feel is best for you! Just don’t expect everything to work fine! The iOS issue can indeed be due to PMS, the fact that it works elsewhere is not proof enough , it is a good indication, but it could also be an incompatibility issue. I suggest you open a thread on the iOS forums and ask for help specifically with that issue.
Let me be a bit more clear, and sorry if I sound harsh, but I really mean to help and it seems I was misunderstood! I am NOT recommending anything! I was simply curious of the hardware limitation and wondered if maybe it would work on FreeBSD since FreeNAS does limit the hardware choice a bit more (ultimately FreeNAS is more of a enterprise level product so their target hardware is ofc more specific)! So again to be clear I am not vouching for anything or recommending product A or B! You should figure out your needs/requirements and use whatever works best for that!
Closing this thread as requested (I an re-open if want at any time)!
actually i tried to upgrade freenas from FreeNAS-9.10.2-U6 (561f0d7a1)
to FreeNAS-11.3-U2
i run in a simple error, that is deocumented on FreeNAS website… update did not work correctly
so i installed FreeNAS 11.3-U2 as new installation, and tried to import config db from my old backup
i run into another error and reported the bug, they postponed and put prio to low and goal is to release in 11.3-U4
bug report https://jira.ixsystems.com/browse/NAS-106636?filter=-2
please share which method you used so i will be able to install new plex server jail… in freenas 11
I’m not sure what that bug report is (jira needs a registered account) but the process should the same as any another system.
Backup the directory where the “application support dir” is set to, and move that over to the new server.
I’m not sure where that was in 9.x and since its a setting users can change It might differ, but looking in “/etc/rc.conf” should over some hint on where it is.
I’m not sure what you mean by “import config db”, but if that means move over just the database then the Preferences.xml and metadata would be missing (which might or might not be okay for you).
Another thing I can at leas offer some help with is that recent FreeNAS version set the “Application Support Dir” to the root of the jail the plugin creates.
lets say the old system kept the data in “/var/lib/plexdata” (ªthis is just an example*)
Make a back up of that
In the new FreeNAS and just to be sure enter the jail shell and look into /etc/rc.conf just to confirm where the application support dir will be set too.
On the backup you should have a inner folder named “Plex Media Server”
Assuming its set to “/” copy over the backed up “Plex Media Server” dir to “/”
start PMS on the new jail
The steps should roughfully be like that, but only you know your own setup and are the best person to handle it.
I am however happy to provide further assistance if you are blocked in any step.
I finally succeeded in upgrading to FreeNAS 11.3-U4 and Plex Plugin 1.19 sth.
(still my Active Directory domain controller is broken, but the rest is up and running. I would like to continue with the original topic)
i quote myself from above: “just iOS devices have this issue at my configuration but i doubt changing to linux and better hardware and upgrading will solve it at all, it might be iOS issue with WiFi”
so i managed to upgrade to Plex 1.19 sth and still the iOS behaves the same, Music played directly most times work , but stops after 4-100 seconds and jumps to next track in queue.
The next track in queue might get a complete error like: Error: unable to play track…
In order to sort out WiFi, I will try to use the iPhone now next to the router and see if these errors happen there too… wish me luck
