So the above is the issue I am having I haven’t be able to update my Plex server and I believe it has to do with the fact that I updated my from the “legacy” version to iX version of FreeNAS, since I installed plex on FreeNAS before iX.
I’m not entirely sure if I can upgrade plex to work directly with iX, or would I need to blow away the legacy version and reinstall plex onto the iX version of FreeNAS.
The above text is from me updating Plex server utilizing shell, and by the way I do have PlexPass that I bought last month.
@mikec_pt I’m also having the same problem as OP above. I’m currently running FreeNas version FreeNAS-11.1-U7 and Plex Media Server in a Jail with version 1.14.1.5488. I would love to manually update to 1.18 given the recent TVDB changes, but the .PMS_update script hasn’t worked for me for at least the past 6 months of Plex updates.
Any advice or guidance you could give would be greatly appreciated!
I was able to successfully update the Plex server to the latest 1.18 release, but now i can’t get the plexmediaserver service to start in the freenas 11.1 jail anymore. I’m currently trying to find the logs to post later. Also searching other threads to see if maybe the PMS_update script put my plex data in a different location then what the pkg install did.
Either way i still have all of my data, and if worst comes to worse I may have to downgrade to get it back. But i’m sure it’s gotta be something simple. just need help tracking it down. Thanks!
Do you think i could just backup my plexdata folder, then unistall and reinstall PMS using pkg install again?
Why use custom scripts? Its best to stick with “pkgng” or build from ports!
Ports have 1.18.4 available right now, and usually don’t take that don’t to update to the one we publish (even for beta).
Its also not super hard to update the port Makefile to grab the new version (I posted a script for that in a couple of threads already too)
Custom scripts will eventually lead to trouble unless you know how to debug them. In the case of PMS_Updater.sh the main issue is it doesn’t take the rc.d script into account and this is where some very important env vars are set, namely “LD_LIBRARY_PATH”.
Hi, sorry for hijacking your thread but I have similar problems I think.
I have been running plex on my freenas for about 5 years now(since 1.0.3.2461) . Thanks alot for it!
In the beginning updated plugins took some time to arrive so since version 1.1.4.2757 i have been using some updater script.
It all worked fine until about 2019-03. I think it was 1.15 I tried installing. I am skilled in windows and getting better at freebsd and ubuntu, but no whiz in the latter two. I found an updated PMS_updater.sh to run and it cleaned out very many old versions laying around for nothing. Thats good. According to the PMS_updater_log it all went ok but the service never starts.
It says in log that I should check UID??
And when fooling around here the plex jail got a new IP adress somehow, well it works anyway.
Ive tried read and follows guides but eventually it crashes and I managed to install a old version again it started.
What I would like to do is move/reinstall plex plugin so it shows up in new FreeNAS web gui. Mine is so old so it only shows in legacy web interface.
Then upgrade to latest version. Im running Version 1.14.1.5488 right now but my plex thinks it is still plugin version 1.1.4.2757.
Can anyone help me out with som simple steps?
I know how to ssh to my nas and enter the jail for shell.
Can I remove the existing one, install a new one in “new” interface of freeNAS then restore backup somehow? Will it work if the backup is from older version?
I also have webtools and some other plugins installed using SSH.
I runt his command sometimes for backup:
cp -prv /var/db/plexdata /media/plex/backup
I am running FreeNAS-11.2-U5

The only reason why I was using a custom PMS_Updater script was because I wasn’t able to use any other method to update plex with freenas…so I googled how to do it and I was using this one site and it was working well for awhile until I updated freenas to 11.1 now that doesn’t seem to work anymore.
I’m guessing the only real way to update it is to delete plex from the legacy interface and install it into the new interface. Would that be correct?
Actually you should update to 11.2 as 11.1 won’t work, sorry I didn’t notice you were on 11.1, I got confused by the other post, apologies!
Yes you need to go to 11.2 and make sure to use only new style jails with VNET enabled or the newer plugin.
You can migrate all plex data over, I can’t recall from head where that was in old style jails, but guessing “/var/lib” something?
But in the new ones it should follow FreeBSD’s pattern so /usr/local/plexdata (or plexdata-plexpass) is whee usually pms db/logs/metadata will go to, just move over you’re old files after install and everything should be back.
