Legality questions on "DVR" and digital movies you own

My plex is for personal / home network use only.

  1. I got playon to help with internet issues. I would download watch then delete. Seems plex pass has a Dvr of some kind too.

I dont like how playon puts watermarks with all my info in not sure if that is need to keep it legal.

Now I am wanting to create an off line library aka cord cutting so to say, but not sure if getting mass seasons / movies and storing them is a legal thing todo. I would be keeping my subscription to said services as they do a good job of releases original content. If this was legal would not keeping the subscription for a month if the bill could not be paid or something cause “legal” issues?

  1. I have a friend who use plex too. He “claims” to have encode some of the dvd/blurays I own and is willing to give me his encodes so I dont have to waste the power and time encoding them. Thing is he has no where near the library of movies I have. He got maybe a 1/2 tote full. Im not too sure if his encodes are his own. Is there anyway to tell if he encoded them or say downloaded them else where like in its meta data or something? Would there be anything wrong with using a file I did not rip/encode myself so long as I have the movie the file is for?

Thanks for your time.

Depends where you live. If you live in Australia it’s basically illegal to use Plex (except DVR - limited time, home movies, and analog sources made digital – EVERYTHING else is illegal). I don’t know how Plex could possible employ Australians (and they do) with out requiring them to break australian law…

If you live in the States it’s legal for you to back up digital copies. It’s illegal to bypass DRM however. So, basically it’s illegal to rip dvds or blurays.

It’s an impossible subject. Do what you feel is right. Sounds like your better than most people here already.

no other comments? open to your thoughts on it as well.

You should be talking to someone with expertise in your region’s laws. Asking for this kind of information in a place like this, where you have no idea whether the person responding has any knowledge, is just asking to be misinformed. It’s foolhardy to ask, and irresponsible to respond, since misinforming you could do you great harm.
