Let down in one area of support for Plex Server functionality

Plex Server is a fantastic tool and handles most of the ways you want to handle video and music. From the categorising of movies , music albums and personal videos, the tags and the plex server does a great job. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for the handling of photos. Lots of people want to share personal photos across their families and Plex would be a great tool to do this if it used the meta data stored in the photos and not have to use local fields within it’s own database.(of which there are not many fields). There are many software which add fields to photos and can be used for searching. I currently have over 100,000 family photos going back to 1895 where I have tagged with peoples names, descriptions and Geo locations. This was all done with free PICASA software before the software’s demise. None of this information can be used by Plex server. All Plex can use is the metadata fields which nobody really wants .(e.g. Camera Make, Camera Model, Aperture, Shutter speed,ISO, etc.)

In the next version of Plex, could it be possible to to use some of the other metadata fields which are more useful for searching and grouping photos.

Do Plex developers look at these messages ? I hope so.

There’s a new phone App for viewing photos (PlexPhotos) which is a lot more stable than the photo support for Windows and Android TVs. It’s great for viewing the photo libraries , but unfortunately still has the same fault as other platforms.

This being the tagging of photos.

I have over 100,00 photos which I have started tagging directly in Plex. It’s painful to do as photos can only be changed one by one. All my photos are tagged internally in the JPEG files, but none of these values can be used in Plex Server. Today I created a subset of my photo library to share with family. To my shock and horror the photos I have tagged in Plex in my ‘master’ area are not tagged in this subset. This means I have to do the tagging work all over again and every time I want to create a subset.

Can someone from the Plex teams please look into this issue.

It would be nice also if the ‘AutoTag’ field for faces could be opened up for manual name tagging. Better still, link it to the ‘Tags’ field in a picture file. (See attached)

This way if anything happened to the Plex Database and I needed to rebuild, all this information I am typing in would not be lost.

Like many folks here, I am a huge fan and user of Plex. I have more than 1,000 movies and and increasing number of home videos on my server available for my family to enjoy. But, I have been delaying adding my huge collection of photos to Plex since I’ve seen so much disappointment expressed by Plex users regarding the weak features and support for using Plex to display photos.

As you probably know, complaints and suggestions have been posted regarding this matter for years. Given that history, we can assume that the folks at Plex are fully aware of these problems, but have done little or nothing to improve this feature of Plex. I really wish they would simply be forthright and honest and state that they have no plans of improving this feature in Plex.
