Aside from the fact that mobile upload is not automatic all the time (spotty, inconsistent, etc.), there are some other problems that make it a worthless feature.
It appears to rename the files. How is the server going to know which files were uploaded and which weren’t?
Mobile photos are not always photos. Sometimes it’s a snapshot of a serial number, or a price tag, or something used for temporary utility. It doesn’t need to be uploaded, or if it is uploaded, we need to be able to delete it and not have it uploaded again. Forgive me, but I’m not one to use a mobile screen to manage large libraries of photos when I can use a command line terminal to whip through files.
There should be an option to delete uploaded photos from the mobile device. Duplicates are stupid.
When photos are uploaded to a single folder, spanning multiple topics, etc., and I want to move them into their appropriate folders on my server, I can’t without the mobile uploads uploading again. Not smart.
Each device in the house doesn’t necessarily need its own mobile upload folder. This should be an option.
Am I missing something here, or have I identified all of the same deficiencies that other paying users are experiencing?
There’s just some things I don’t let plex handle… Photos is one of them… Even if they made the improvements as you suggested, it’s just not something I would even consider… And I’d be willing to venture that Photo users are such a small portion of the actual business model, that it’s got a lower priority than everything else… This and many other reasons are why I just use Resilio Sync, it shares everything between all my devices including my pc, all of my devices dump into the same folder, it’s also not limited to just pictures, any PDF’s or documents or essentially any files you put in the folder also get sync’d, it’s similar to hosting your own drop box, but all devices will have a copy of all the files… So if one of your devices is low on space, time for an SD upgrade… It’s pretty simple at that point to just point the Plex server to the folder, so that it picks up the images…
Food for thought
Edit: I realize it sounds argumentative… But it’s quite the contrary… I view plex as a “Jack of all Trades - Master of None” emphasis on the Master of None… So I use something else when Plex lacks in a given department, photos happens to be that department…
Which is precisely why I use Resilio Sync instead of the cloud… I don’t particularly like google or apple for that matter having a copy of my photos, especially not the Boudoir shoots I take for clients… Private cloud = infinitely better in my situation… No middle man to worry about
Yeah, no cloud services for me. I actually figured out that the Photo sync app i have on my iPhone can auto-sync to SMB shares, so that’s how it’s going to be. Probably done with Plexpass.
