I have the same issue. I use Apple TV 4K to play Plex on my Samsung TV. Some tv shows and movies volume are fine but I would say about 60% of my files have an issue with the volume being too low. I also have to put my volume at 100% and it still is not that loud. All my other apps on Apple TV work fine re: volume. Also when I play by media files on other app and on my computer I have no issue with the volume.
I was so happy to get Plex setup, being a lifetime Kodi user but my smart tvs dont have Kodi. The second tv series I watched has super low audio. If im eating I cant hear at 100% volume. Def has to do with audio/filetype as some works fine. As no other apps suffer this issue on any other hardware I blame plex and am again looking at how to get Kodi. Perhaps time for an RP4, such a shame the devs dont care!! Keep this thread going ppl just to show the world the love we get from devs when reporting a MAJOR issue/flaw BUG.
I’m hopping this train too! I recently built a small plex server to stream mu music collection (RIP Google Play Music). I really love my Plex. I can sorta deal with the low volume when watching movies and such. The low music volume sucks loads!
I use Plexamp on my phone and 2 PCs. When I use it in my car over bluetooth, I nearly have to max the volume to get the tunes decently loud. I have the silly placebo pre-amp setting in plexamp maxed out and it does nothing.
Please fix this! Music that only plays at 2/3 volume sucks!
Oh boy, the joy of trying to convince plex developers that something is actually an issue and not a bunch of people with electronic morgellons disease. Here we go.
Playing this file in VLC has the appropriate volume level. Playing it via the web player under chrome in windows, the audio volume is frustratingly low.

I can see no controls to force a stereo downmix, which sounds like it would resolve everyone’s issue.
I’ve solved the problem by switching to Jellyfin. The clients have a global setting to specify how many channels are supported. Plex will never make the change - they refuse to listen and just want to blame someone or something else.
I’ve been using Jellyfin for over a week now and my “imperfect” tv box (as deemed by Plex) is now useful again. Both the Jellyfin AndroidTV and Mobile Android apps have global app settings that allow you to force a downmix to stereo. Let’s face it. Plex is never going to fix this for us. They just don’t care.
I have been using Plex for over 7 years now and are a Plex Pass member (life). I too have this same issue with Roku. We need it fixed!
I hear that jellyfin doesn’t have this issue, I’m gonna give them a try. not nearly as optimized, BUT the audio issue is driving me insane.
Indeed Jellyfin does not have these issues. I keep JF running side-by-side with Plex because too often Plex just s*its the bed on something (Not saying JF is perfect, but I didn’t spend $100 for it either). This is an issue that my kids run up time and time again. We don’t let them watch TV all the time, but they are allowed to cast movie audio to our Google Mini/Nest devices while doing other things. They also like to listen to movie audio as bedtime “music” most nights.
Not unfrequently they will play a file via Plex that is almost impossible to hear on the Mini despite the audio being perfectly clear when casting via JF. We found this again with a movie we just got with an EAC35.1 soundtrack. I tried to change the only two audio settings that I found under Player (Advanced). By default “Normalize” is enabled and “Force multi channel” is disabled. I tried switching both of those settings and it seemed to do absolutely nothing.
It is utterly ridiculous that there are no options for controlling the normalization or downmixing of tracks.
Thanks again for not living up to expectations Plex.
Amazing how the dev team sucks… I regret my purchase
If you want help, then please help us identify the issue by providing logs after recreating the issue. No one has yet to provide me any information to investigate. To be clear, I do not notice this issue, which is why I need more information. PMS logs, client logs, and XML for the media being tested all help.
I’ve made it clear that the problem for me was due to defective firmware on the tv box which results in incorrect information provided to Plex. The problem is hardware. I know that. But other players provide a way to force downmix to stereo. Plex does too but in a completely idiotic way. We have to select a super low quality that results in 240p or 360p video in order to force the audio transcode.
If Plex does not want to provide a way to allow users to work around hardware problems that everyone knows exists, then just say so. We’ve been going around in circles about this for months.
I can’t give you logs because I’m now using Jellyfin on the TV Box in question. I don’t even have Plex installed on it anymore.
This is not a logs situation. We want a little slider with a plus and minus button with the DBs in the middle.
Audio Boost:
[-] 10db [+]
It doesn’t matter if we want it negative 30db or plus 60db, we just want the option to boost it globally. And don’t even with that “loud”, “louder” bullhog, give us an actual number and some outrageous ranges.
Thank you.
Make a feature request.
Be aware that is some cases the audio is low because your device is tying to play multi-channel audio through stereo speakers. Increasing the gain won’t help with that.
We did, in May 2020 when this post was created and 50 odd replies later nothing has been done. As the OP states, it has nothing to do with downmixed anything. It could be mono, stereo, or yo mama. The audio be low.
This post is not a feature request. Request need to be made in the “Feature Suggestion” section where users can then vote. This is what allows Plex to gauge the interest in a feature.
If there is a feature request thread, I couldn’t find it.
Did people vote for all the bloatware or was it just coded in?
I don’t remember the “Let’s make the program 3 times slower by adding old movies with ads” feature request but that could just be me.
Ok to anyone watching this thread I added the vote information at the top. Time to make your opinion count.
PLEX is the only player that plays low audio on my PC. We need an option to adjust. Its trying to play 5.1 on a stereo output. Why can’t we change that? Why does the plex app not know to match the audio output? Every other app does. Should be able to change the output at least. This is the biggest issue I have with PLEX.
Is this where we have gotten too? We have create a feature request to hear the audio?
