Plex apps should be using the correct audio type it is told to use by your device. If your device is telling Plex the wrong thing, well… Adding an override to overcome the wrong information from your device would be a feature request.
That is another conversation. The audio is low no matter what the format it is or the hardware it’s running on.
It’s a global issue and that includes your ad based movies.
What device are you using? Low volume across the board is not something I’m aware of.
I´m having the same problem with my plex on firefox.
If i’m watching my videos on a VLC Player or Windows Media play it’s like almost half of the volume it’s on Plex.
Had this with many Files now, movies or series…allways very low.
Today I came across a Movie who has even on 100% and Windows on 100% the volume like it´s on quite mode or something.
I hope there will be a fix for this.
This really seems self-defeating on Plex’s part. We identify a deficiency that Plex has that other products do not have and Plex’s response is always to put it on the user. You have the information and we know that lots of people have this problem – all kinds of products have bugged firmware that users can’t do much about.
I know that as a former software programmer/manager/designer, this would not be my attitude when customers have gone out of their way to provide accurate information about how my product was inferior to the competition.
I don’t bother with the feature request section anymore. Users are only given 5 votes. Basically the feature request section has become a place where good ideas go to die.
“What device are you using? Low volume across the board is not something I’m aware of.”

EDIT: Oh and let’s not forget half a dozen windows 10 PCs
Agree! This “low audio” is the only thing annoying me with Plex. Love it otherwise. If I, for example, want to watch a TV series on my laptop while cooking food I have to use VLC because the kitchen fan overpowers audio from Plex. Same issue on my Mac, PC, iPhone and Android. Other players just have higher volume.
I have no idea how the audio engine in Plex (or other similar software) works, but I really like the VLC solution where you can “force” the volume to more than 100%. Im sure that impacts audio quality, but its still a lot better than barely hearing the audio at all.
fix when?
Is Plex not capable of writing the code to fix this.
FIX IT ONCE AND FOR ALL.
Wow, this seems to be a very common thing. I too have been having issues with the volume.
I am playing from my Nvidia Shield to my Samsung soundbar / TV and I can play Netflix, Prime, You-Tube, and anything else off my Shield perfectly, but the volume from the Plex app I literally have to turn it all the way to 95 -100%. same on my newly built PC. This just doesn’t make sense.
There must be something Plex can go in and do to make the volume better. I thought I wouldn’t need to use my Kodi app anymore with Plex but I have no choice. Maybe I will look into Jellyfinn as I this is so frustrating. I would send you whatever files you want but not sure how to get them. Maybe some more detail on how to get the information that you need, I don’t know. I really like Plex, but don’t have the patience for this low volume.
Volume is low on windows pc (firefox browser) and on Chromecast with Google TV.
What logs do you need? How can I help? What are you looking for exactly?
Why is it that software creators like XBMC/KODI can manage to configure audio amplification on their systems for quiet audio based files but Plex can’t seem to figure out how to add this much wanted and needed feature. Things like this are a big reason I will never use past the free version of this software, creators take this to mind. Fix the simple needed things first then worry about addons, bells and whistles.
Please fix the audio issues with the ability to increase the audio channels.
Hey peeps, remember to vote for this fix!
I don’t have a Plex low volume issue on my TCL TV, Roku 3, Roku Stick+ or Roku Ultra. I don’t have low volume issues on my iOS tablets. I don’t have low volume issues on my Mac or PC. Each of those devices does tend to playback files a little differently and are hooked up to audio\speaker setups differently so can’t really gauge across the board that way… that is a small, yet variable, anecdotal experience but does indicate it’s not impacting everyone.
I sometimes have individual files that have lower or higher native volume or from transcoding multichannel to stereo, but not across the board with the app itself. And in those scenarios it’s lower I don’t have to crank the volume up, just adjust a little higher or lower than the last file that played.
HBO Max - I have audio problems with on Roku… gotta crank that up more than anything else and that’s annoying.
I’ve seen other reports of audio settings on the TV\Client causing higher\lower output irrespective of the app being used - and experienced that myself - so it might be related to equipment combination setups more than Plex specifically. For example, the “auto discover” on Roku for compatible HDMI audio support doesn’t always work and will default to stereo which can cause multichannel audio to down mix which may lower volume.
I don’t see many mediafile info or audio setups detailed in this thread though so maybe that’d help with troubleshooting for some folks?
I just tried something on my Roku TV and it helped. I noticed no matter what setting I choose in the video player options, the server showed HW on video but no transcode on audio as everything was going out 5.1. Audio was very low and with fans and background noises I could barely hear the show or movie I was watching.
After playing with settings I figured this out: If I need a recorded episode or live TV (HDHomerun) show to be louder , I have to choose the options once in the video player and go to stream tab and drop it down to Espanol (stereo). Once exiting I noticed the volume was louder and on the server it showed the audio being transcoded from 5.1 to Stereo.
Hope this helps some people here because this has been driving my wife crazy since converting over to the Plex side.
I have this issue with my Samsung TV playing from the Plex app from the Samsung app store. It happens whether I use the TV speakers or the sound bar. I find myself setting the volume in the 60s when everything else on the TV besides Plex is deafening around 20. I’d love to contribute to a solution in some useful way. If there are logs to be pulled from my Samsung TV, someone tell me how. I came to this post looking for a solution because I have been dealing with this since I got the TV last black Friday and anymore, I just don’t watch Plex content there. Since it is the nicest display in my house, that seems counterproductive. Just tell me what to do and where to send it. Thanks.
Did you vote? Everyone keeps posting here but then nobody votes to fix it.
I missed it at the top but I have voted now.
I didn’t see a “vote” option, but I came on here because I can’t find the audio boost anymore on Plex. I’m guessing they dev’d it out? I have to crank up the volume now, and I mean what used to be level 8 is now level 28!
